Godsend for an itchy horse!
My horse has weird bouts of itchy skin....itching himself raw and sometimes oozing. After coming in recently from having itched himself on damp ground, his belly, sheath and legs were covered with painful sores. I could clear up the sores but couldn't stop him itching himself! In 4 days on your Spirulina, he completely stooped itching. No more sores, no more rubbed hair, no more rubbing himself on buckets and walls or the ground. Skin and coat are in great shape and sprang back quickly. Wow, am I impressed!
I can’t wait to see how this product fairs during bug season when he usually rubs himself so badly he looks like a Shar pei by the end of May. If it works for “bug itch”, it will be a true miracle. FYI, I give it to him in forage and he gobbles it up! Highly recommend!

Did the trick
At our vet’s recommendation we added spirilina to our horses feed due to a pretty significant stable cough. He’s having issues with the dust his bedding kicks up.
After about two to three weeks his cough is completely gone - completely! I, and he, am very happy.

Great Supplement
One of my horses was diagnosed with mild COPD. He would cough every once in a while but it has never been very severe, but I still wanted to find something to help him. This was the third supplement I tried with him and I didn't think it was doing anything since he still had a slight cough. I took him off of it and started looking for another supplement. However, he was off of it for a week and I noticed that his cough had greatly increased. I immediately put him back on it and I will not remove it again. It really does help!

Great Product. Worked well.
I bought this product for my pony that was coughing this late summer/fall due to allergies. I noticed a huge improvement very quickly. Within 10-14 days the cough was completely gone. I still have him on the supplement 3 months later and he still has not coughed. He will definitely be staying on this long term. He is also a crazy picky eater and I can NEVER get him to eat a supplement and he absolutely devours this one. I love this supplement.

Finally something that works!
My gelding would cough and cough during his workouts. After being on spirulina for a few weeks, he rarely coughs. A very big improvement.

A Great Option
My 18yo TB has an increasingly worse time in the summer months, with intense reactions to biting insects, general discomfort in humidity, itchy sheath and tail (even though I'm religious about keeping him clean) -- he rubs his tail and makes it very hard to braid for shows. He has developed mild seasonal allergies that come up in late spring and there is some coughing and eye-goop associated with that. The SmartBarn Services reps suggested Spirulina, and he's been on it for almost a month at the regular dose. He's less itchy, allergies are gone (though in fairness this is about when they go away on their own so I can't definitively say it's the Spirulina) and he isn't rubbing his tail. I will definitely be keeping him on it at least until fall, and putting him back on it in the spring. I'm on board for anything that keeps him feeling great -- he is still actively competing and has not been stepped down, so I am in preservation mode bigtime to keep him at his best. This has definitely made a difference for us. It's a little on the strong-smelling side (it smells good and fruity, but strong), but he eats it fine in his breakfast -- he also gets wet beet pulp for breakfast so that's pretty good for getting supplements into him. I haven't given it to him "dry" so can't speak to that.

Works great!
This is my second summer buying Spirulina Pellets for my old mare. She has had seasonal allergies for many years now, and Spirulina is the only thing that helps her goopy eyes. This year, I began giving it to another of my mares, and I'm happy to say that I've had the same experience. It works great for their seasonal allergies and, combined with fly masks, has made them more comfortable. As for palatability, it smells flowery and they don't like the taste or smell. I mix the pellets with sweet feed and Senior and as long as I don't give them the loading dose, they'll eat it. All in all, I'm very happy with the product!

Took some time, but has helped cough/breathing
My 22 yo QH mare suddenly started coughing, noisy shallow breathing, with an increase in breathing rate. This happened in the summer when she was on pasture all the time. It's possibly allergies (we have had a weird, wet humid summer) or an air quality issue, as there is a great deal of construction and earth moving going on in the area.
It got worse in the fall and we put her on clenbuterol for 10 days in early Nov which helped quite a bit but she still was not back to normal. SmartPak recommended this for her issues and sent me some samples. Since she liked the taste I started her on this daily in mid-December along with APF Pro (1 ml every other day with a little beet pulp). I also was giving her Cough Ease syrup before riding, as recommended by my vet. Meanwhile my vet did a BAL test to rule out anything serious. That came back negative for infection, but mild inflammation in the lungs.
She definitely perked up after starting this combination, and it took awhile but now the vet says her lungs sound completely normal. This was approximately 3.5 months after starting the supplements, her improvement has been gradual. She still coughs a little, but has a lot of energy, seems to feel great. I plan on keeping her on this regimen.
I've learned there are a lot of things that can cause respiratory issues. I'm very glad this has helped my horse feel better and hope this information helps others.

Did not work for respiratory issues
I've tried so many things to help my mare's respiratory issues. This just gets added to the long list of what doesn't work for her issue.

Didnt work
My gelding gets really bad sweet itch in the summer. Bought the spirulina pellets off the review of a friend in the Hope's it would help my gelding. We went through 2 bags with no sign of improvement. Will not purchase again for him. He ate it really well though and hes a picky eater.

Great for Allergy Sufferers
Great product! My gelding has seasonal respiratory allergies that result in a runny nose, wheezing and just general discomfort. Since most antihistamines cause him to stop sweating I decided to try the natural route. Within a few weeks all symptoms stopped and he was feeling like his wild self again. He tends to be a picky eater, but seems to have no objections to eating this mixed into his grain. This product is definitely worth giving a try.

Horse wouldn't eat it
I bought this to use for a seasonal cough, based on others' reviews and in comparison to other similar products. My horse will eat just about anything but he wouldn't even touch this. I tried it with my other horse, just to see his reaction and he spit out the first taste. The customer service rep at SP cheerfully refunded my money and told me, which I didn't know, that they offer samples on some of their products. So five stars to SP but only one for the spirulina.

Not for a picky eater
I would have loved to see if this worked for my horses constant rhinitis, but she refuses to eat it. I am going to try a very slow introduction to see if I can get her accustomed to the taste and I will submit another review, but just be aware if your horse is a picky eater, they might not like the taste. Has a strong smell of banana.

Horse got some relief!!!!!!
I feel my Sue has received some help for her coughing. She does still cough but does not have to stop while walking to get her breath. She was dianosed with mucus in her trachea and I just wonder if there is anything else that would work better to dry that up.

Seems to be helping!
My 18 year old mare has had respiratory problems each summer with an exercise related cough and slight runny nose. She has had some mucus discharge as well. These symptoms start up in July and are gone by November. My vet said she has allergies to something that grows at that time. I used Zyrtec (generic) last summer and it helped but did not stop her coughing completely. I did some research (found an online article about algae DHA supplementation done by Purdue University which showed positive results in horses with respiratory distress) and then bought this product. My horse so far has not started her regular coughing but I will wait and see if her coughing starts up in July. She does have less bug bites on her belly. Spirolina (DHA) does improve the immune system in multiple ways and resistance to sweet itch is one of them. I will do a second review as we go through this month and see if the coughing improves.

Worked for my gelding's allergies
My gelding was doing a lot of head shaking, snorting, snotty nose, just generally miserable. After a week on this supplement, it all stopped. I wasn't sure if it was the Spirulina or if maybe the allergen was no longer around, so I stopped the supplement and within days the symptoms were back. Started it up again, symptoms gone. He'll be on this for life.

Easy to use pellets
My gelding has seasonal allergies - which is mainly a runny nose, but it was irritating him, so I put him on spirulina pellets and it did clear up. His eyes are less puffy too. He eats them with no problem.
It worked so well I started my older mare who gets teary eyes from dust on them. She is a super picky eater and and I had previously tried to get her to eat spirulina tablets with no luck. She eats these pellets no problem. They have helped decrase the severity of her symptoms, but not cleared it entirely - and she has been on them for a couple of months.
Great product and price.

Wonderful Product
My Arabian has been on this product for a month now. I live in Northern CA and my horse started getting hives in December that seemed to come and go with the weather. When it rained they got worse and then they would start to go away when we had dry weather. He seemed to be reacting to the Oak Tree Pollen. With in 2 weeks of being on Spirulina his hives were gone. We have had more rain and lots of pollen is in the air but his hives are staying gone. He likes the pellets so it is easy to feed.

Tried It On a Whim
After 17 days of a nasal tubed ICU horse at the state vet school due to severe life-threatening infection, my gelding developed very bad pneumonia twice. Heavy antibiotics and great care saved his life, but left his lungs altered and a nasty cough. Being a super active horse before he got sick, it was painful to hear him cough all night long, or in situations like dust, damp, cold, pollen, etc. Trail dust on a ride could set him off.
SmartPak's Spirulina pellets had just come out, and a flyer in my email mentioned their benefits for respiratory health. Knowing the SP guarantee from other products, I figured we would try it for a month and see. That was May of 2017, and we have been on them ever since. The product probably took the full month to really see results, but the rest of the months have been so much nicer! If he has a slight occasional cough in the meantime, I can give him a dose of horse cough syrup. Prior to the Spirulina I was going through bottles of that. The same weather that would set him off before is not doing so now. He would not eat it alone at first so I mixed it into his feed, but now he will nibble it right out of my hand. This was a great find, and a serious change in my gelding's respiratory health.

My mare was diagnosed with RAD, and I immediately started her on this, along with MSM and soaking her hay. NO COUGHING WHATSOEVER! I don’t know how this product would do all on its own, but it has definitely worked wonders for her. She’s like a different horse! Thank you Smartpak!

Unexpected Improvements
I ordered the spirulina pellets for a 17yo 18h Percheron who has what we suspect is a bit of exercise-induced asthma. The jury is still out on its impact for that, but much to my delight I'm seeing an enormous difference in his overall movement. He'd been on an Rx NSAID for about 2 years for some arthritis in his right stifle, and several months ago he started having some sort of an issue with his left shoulder, particularly at the trot.
We experimented with a number of things, including taking him off the daily Rx with a plan of putting him on a different Rx prn, and in the meantime I started him on the spirulina to see if it would improve his breathing. About five weeks into the supplement I started seeing notable changes in suppleness, and within three weeks he went from being able to manage a few steps of turn on the haunches to the left, to 360 turns both directions with ease.
We weren't expecting to see joint and stiffness issues improve with the spirulina, but it's the only thing we changed, so we don't know what else to credit. And if this keeps up he won't be going back on any sort of NSAID, which can only be a good thing. The only drawback is that he seems to be feeling awfully good (read: awfully fresh), and at his size that does bring on a whole other sort of challenge. (!)

No benefits seen yet, but my horse eats it!
My horse has severe Inflammatory Airway Disease from environmental allergies so I added spirulina to all the other things I'm using to try to bring him some relief. I can't tell that spirulina has helped, but I know it won't hurt and he eats it just fine.

I wish my horse would eat it...
I have fed my horse human grade Spirulina powder and although it smelled horrible and created a green swamp in her feed dish when wet...she gobbled it up. She will not touch this Spirulina as I think it is actually overly sweetened. It smells quite bitter. I wish there was a flavored and a non-flavored option. I do love that it is in pellet form (the powder floats through the air and is easy to inhale). Also, for what it is worth, my mare is not a picky eater. If the flavoring changes I will re-purchase in the future!
