Design flaws are disappointing
Water buckets in our Wisconsin barn stalls freeze when the temps drop to single digits and below zero. Bought these to at least slow down the rate of freezing. Unfortunately the design has a few flaws that should be remedied. 1. We can't use the top piece that covers part of the bucket top because we use bucket holders that rest on the back lip of the pail. The top piece doesn't have a cut out space to allow that. 2. The two skinny straps on the sides of the bottom of the pail cover are too fragile to hold the bucket cover on very well. Furthermore, the velcro on one end of the strap is the wrong texture to connect to the velcro on the side of the cover. The straps also didn't line up well with the handle of the bucket on 1 of the 3 covers we purchased. And, the skinny straps are not sown on well. My friend pulled one of them off as she was putting the cover on a pail the first time. Disappointing. We made some more robust straps with the proper velcro end so we could use the covers. They do seem to keep the water in our buckets from freezing in single digit weather. If I buy bucket covers again, I'll buy the insulated plastic ones.

Simple bucket ice protection
I bought one last year and another this year. So far they have worked well for me down to in the 20s (degrees F) in the barn with no ice what so ever in the morning. However, I do use them with RUBBER 5 gallon buckets which I think helps and I use warm water that I bring from my house to fill them up in the evening, which also helps. When it gets below 20 but above 10 they have a thin bit of ice, again using warm tap water. When it is below 10 the ice is a lot thicker, but not solid so I can just dump it out and start over. That is a benefit of the rubber buckets too, is that if it does freeze solid the ice still comes out easily with out cracking like plastic. Neither of my horses have any problem drinking through the cover opening of the top. Probably not going to help at subzero at all, but for just below freezing it works well.

Works great I hang two buckets overnight one with one without. The one without has thick ice, the one with had an ice film at 20 degrees.

They help a lot in really cold weather
We have used these covers this week in the barn. It is unusually cold with lows down to 9 degrees. With four horses and the barn doors closed at night there was only a small about of ice on the top of the buckets.

Didn’t work at all. Waste of money
I bought these because I don’t have direct power to my barn and didn’t want to run a cord. I live in Maine and it was only 30 degrees and I had a thick layer of ice on the top, Thick enough I couldn’t even push through it. Total waste of money

Pass it by ….
I bought two, and returned one. Hated it!!! Cumbersome and hard to get on the bucket. Might work of in a barn with many horses, but my water froze solid and it wasn’t even the coldest part of a Maine winter.
Also paid to have it shipped back. I thought as a smart packer I had free shipping both ways. I must have misunderstood.
The one I had to keep because I used it one night gathers dust in the corner.

These Covers Really work
Just started using these insulated bucket covers. All I can say is….Amazing! Just to “test the covers, I unplugged my tank heater for my 100 gallon water tank, which takes a long time to freeze. A stall water bucket would freeze much faster. I put around 4 gallons of water in each stall bucket for the night. Low temps were around 25 degrees. This morning my 100 gallon tank was frozen with several inches of ice. My insulated stall buckets were Ice Free!!!! I wish I had bought these years ago! Appear to be sturdy enough, easy to use. My horses had no problems with adapting to the covers on the buckets.

Did not work!
With the cost of electricity I thought I’d try these. First cold day in Maine, I believe it was in the 20’s, my bucket froze pretty significantly. I went back to electric after I wasted over $100. I won’t risk no water available for my horses. Very disappointed.
For the folks that It did work, is your barn heated? Or are you in a warm climate?

AVOID MERLOT. Green is ok
RUN AWAY FROM THE MERLOT COLORED ONES! Ive had to contact Smartpak 3 times because the Merlot ones we ordered came in defective with the velcro thin ends having the same type of velcro instead of the opposite piece it needed to velcro to itself. NIGHTMARE color. Ordered 2 green ones and 2 merlot originally. Green ones came fine both on initial order and on replacement for the merlot. Got to the point Smartpaker told me to just donate the merlot ones. SUUUUPER disappointed in the merlot. Wanted christmas colors. Green ones seem to be doing its job. slight layer of ice build up.
