The SmartPak Breakaway Halter is one smart barn staple! It features a leather crown piece designed to break under undue pressure. This leather crown piece is adjustable, along with the chin strap, giving you the ability to create a great fit for your horse. Plus, this halter also offers a heavy nylon webbed noseband and cheek pieces that are durable and available in a variety of colors to suit your personal taste. Additionally, brass plated hardware offers a classic look (silver option will come with silver plated hardware). Finally, the snap closure on the throat latch makes it easy to take it on and off without having to adjust the crown piece every time.

Good quality
I bought this a little over a year ago. It has been thoroughly abused since then by myself with two thoroughbreds and works great. I use it around the barn, out on endurance trails, and to/from fox hunts. Without giving it a whole lot of love it still looks fantastic. I have had a horse pull back on it, and I mean really sit back, without it breaking... meant to be a breakaway and that is my only concern but there was no harm done so I'm really not bothered by it. Color has not faded at all and I haven't touched the leather and it is still feeling and looking nice. Excellent quality for a great price.

Looks great, poor performance
Used one day and leather broke and clip no longer functions. Horse barely pulled back and it broke. The clip is cheaply made.

Awesome everyday halter!
If you are looking for a Great every day altar for use around the barn, one that you don’t mind leaving outside hanging on the fence. This is it! It stands up to wear and tear and even better it’s breakaway. So if your horse occasionally does something silly like mine does, only the crownpiece will break

solved a difficult problem
I was having a great deal of trouble catching my horse. I'm keeping the break-away halter on him all the time - and feeling safe about it. Now I simple walk up to the horse put the lead rope on and were all set. This halter solved a really bad problem

Good halter; bad crown piece
This halter is nice and fits our cob sized pony well. Unfortunately the crown piece is leaving orange dye on our gray pony's head so I am searching for an alternative crown piece (thus the star deduction). I tried the padded crown piece but it is too long for our pony on the highest holes so the search continues.

Did its job—but not perfect.
I only bought this halter a few weeks ago, but it's already done for. In a very scary trailering incident, my horse went down in the trailer. Luckily, this halter did exactly what it was supposed to do—it broke; the leather strap split right in two—and my horse was able to recover, get back up, and thankfully ended up with nothing more serious than a few scrapes and bruises. However, while the leather strap could easily be replaced, the throatlatch snap also broke, so it's not really usable anymore.
A couple of additional notes on the halter before it broke: After reading that this halter runs slightly large, I ordered a cob size for my fine-boned, dainty-faced warmblood mare, and it fit pretty well. I did have one complaint about the nylon material...the bottom of the noseband (under her chin) got immediately and extremely fuzzy from normal use (hay-eating, turnout, etc). I've never had a nylon halter that got fuzzy like this, especially so quickly, in a matter of days.

Perfect turnout halter
I have multiple of these. They are great for turnout because they are breakaway. The nylon part of the halter is pretty thick and retains its shape unlike some other halters that are flimsy. The leather crown is thin but not enough that I’d worry about it falling apart.

Fits well
I bought this to use with a grazing muzzle on my mare. She’s a Morgan and has a complicated (but very pretty) head- small muzzle/nose, deeper in the throatlatch. I was concerned about the fit of this halter after reading other reviews. She wears an ‘average horse’ in most brands, as long as the chin is adjustable, but I went with a cob size halter when I ordered. It fits great! It seemed small/ short in the crownpiece initially, but as she’s worn the halter, it has broken in and is now on the middle holes on the crown. I like the adjustable chin and variety of colors. Seems like a quality halter for the price.

Not impressed!!
I bought these a week ago, and they came in pretty quickly. I just don't feel like they are worth the money. The same exact looking boot without the BOT technology is sold somewhere else. The straps don't really fit my horse's legs correctly, and the scratch really easily. I am disappointed, and I wouldn't recommend them becasue they aren't worth the price, and I didn't notice a difference with the weltex technology.

My mare is an average size and this runs large. Also, the adjustable chin piece could use work, some of the holes are misshapen and it’s hard to adjust.

Nice idea, break away strap broke
I bought this in July, and loved the color and the concept, but a month ago the break away leather strap split and broke! My horse can be rough on things and found it on the ground. Would not use a leather breakaway strap with a nylon halter again.

Great color, runs a bit large
My guy usually wears horse-sized halters/bridles. I ordered the horse size, and it almost fits with all the buckles on the smallest holes, but it is a little bit big. I wish I'd gone with the cob size, but for the price I just decided to keep it. I do wish the nose piece had a keeper, as the strap is very long when buckled on the smallest hole. I got it in turquoise, and the color is great!

Purchased for gelding that wears an average in Weaver adjustable breakaway.
The nylon is half the thickness of a Weaver halter which allows this halter to droop across the nose and is not the easiest to put on because of the thin/softness.
Runs large - when the chin is adjusted to the smallest it can go I could fit a tennis ball between it and the chin. This due in part to the halter hanging too low , I will need to add holes to the breakaway piece so the halter can be adjusted up a few inches. Halter has no label on it to identify size, just the packaging tag.
Will probably use on another horse with a much larger head and purchase a Weaver for this horse.
Hardware looks okay but would like heavier nylon.

Beautiful and Practical
Absolutely love this halter! I bought the navy horse size for a 16.2 OTTB with a finer head. The horse size is definitely big, I had to put the crown piece all the way to the top of both holes, but it fit perfectly after that. Super adjustable, looks really nice, and it's super light. The nylon pieces aren't bulky. Oh, and it WORKS! My lovely boy got his halter stuck on a hook in the barn aisle, he popped the leather crown piece with only one good pull. Had it taken longer to break I know he would have hurt himself. Will be buying multiple replacement pieces! This is a SAFE and beautiful halter for every day, and nice enough to use at the shows.
