SmartPak Returns

We put our products to the test in our barns and on our horses, so we're confident that you'll be thrilled with your purchase. However, we know that life in the barn can sometimes be unpredictable. That's why we've created a stress-free return policy. If you purchase an item and it doesn't meet your expectations, we want to know about it, take care of you and give you your money back.

Free Return Shipping on all Sized Items

As riders and online shoppers, we know it can be tough to buy a new bridle or pair of boots without trying them on. That's why we moved the fitting room to your living room (or barn)! From breeches to blankets, if you or your horse can try it on, you can return it, free! Just use the pre-paid return label included in your order within 60 days from the purchase date. The Fine Print

We love our products and we're happy to take them back - even custom items. We'll happily take back everything from engraved halters to personalized jackets - even embroidered blankets that have been worn (minus the manure, please). But there are a few things we have to restrict returns on (silly federal regulations).

Undergarments
Health regulations require that undergarments (including bras) need to be in new condition (tags and packages intact) in order to be returned. (Even if it wasn't required, do you really want to shop from a store that takes back used undergarments?!)

Saddles
As riders, we know what a big investment a saddle is. That's why we're proud to offer the best Test Ride program in the business. You can keep our Test Ride saddles risk-free for five days, to really make sure you like the fit and the feel. We know that to truly try a saddle, you have to really ride in it. So go ahead and girth it up. Forget about wrapping your stirrup leathers. Try it with or without a saddle pad. Basically, treat it like you already bought it, so you can make sure you really want to. Because when you buy a saddle from us, we want to make sure you love it. Of course, we want our other customers to love their new saddles, too.
That's why we have a Test Ride option for each saddle we carry - so that all of the other saddles can stay in pristine condition, waiting for their new owners. For this reason, if you purchase a saddle outside the Test Ride program, it's still eligible for return, but must be free from any marks or damage.

So that's it. Seriously. Those are all of our "rules." Well, except the most important one - treating our customers the way we want to be treated. So if you have any questions or if there is anything we can do, please call us at 1-800-461-8898 or email CustomerCare@SmartPak.com. We are always happy to help.

Slow Feeder Saver is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from No mess no fuss and horses keep the area clean. I have had this product for 4 years and love it. I only use it in the winter and the horses have kept the area clean and there is barely any mess to rake up. I keep it under the shed so everything is kept high and dry!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! My horses been eating hay out of these for a couple of years! They love it and so do I!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hay Feeder My horses spend most of the winter and spring on a sandy dry lot. This hay feeder has been fantastic. It slows down their hay consumption, and prevents them from eating sandy hay off the ground. They have been using this for about 2 years, and NO PROBLEMS with their teeth. This grate is big enough that it does not cause them to wear their teeth down. Other products have a smaller grate, and that may cause problems. We love this hay feeder!!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cool idea, but not donkey proof Wanted to provide access to hay for donkeys to slowly munch on and this feeder is big and heavy and solid. But not much is donkey proof...they managed to kick? hit? holes in the plastic. Doesn't really affect usage other than them bent on destruction for fun...like wild toddlers. Use on less destructive animals...horses would be safe bet.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good and bad I have a similar product with the metal grate. Great concept, but my younger horse now has chunks out of his teeth from the metal grate. It didn't affect my older horse. I agree with a previous review that if the grate was made out of a nibble net material, it would be a home run!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really does save hay Bought 1 to try and then bought 2 more. Keeps my horses from scattering and soiling their expensive hay. They eat right down the bottom of the feeder, leaving just the coarse stalks at the bottom. Easy to keep clean. Heavy enough that they don't move the box (they push it a little if its empty) but light enough that I can move it when needed. No issues with the metal grates - plenty of room for them to grab hay in-between.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect way to feed horses We have used the Slow Feeder Saver for our entire equine operation here at Stony Hill Ranch for nearly three years. Horses are fed outside in the paddock and in the stalls with these boxes. Contrary to the experience of one of the other reviewers, our vets and equine dentist have not seen any effects on teeth from using this device. What we do notice is that horses' lips become stronger, they make more use of their incisor teeth compared to free hay, and they are incredibly relaxed as a result of being able to eat freely all day and night. Most horses are fed small amounts of hay in two to three meals that typically amount to much less than their daily caloric requirements (a horse not in work requires about 17,000 kcal, or roughly 18 lbs per day) - which then is made up for by one to two meals totaling 6-7 lbs of grain. Their stomachs empty every half hour and continuously produce acid whether or not they have any food in the stomach. This is one of the leadng causes of stomach ulcers in horses. In addition, the small stomach capacity means that large grain meals tend to fill the entire stomach and then flush too rapidly into the rest of the digestive system. Since horses evolved to be continuous feeders and did not evolve to handle large meals of grain, this management practice is a leading cause of colic (a condition that barely exists in horses in the wild). The Slow Feeder Saver lets horses control their eating. In the wild, horses spend about 70% of their day consuming grass. With a slow feeder saver, horses can meter their own eating and have forage in their digestive tract 24 hours a day. Once used to this, they stop the bolting behavior often seen with discrete meals and stress is obviously reduced, as seemn by head position and movement style. Their eating position with the Slow Feeder Saver is similar to pasture grazing, which improves digestion and avoids the respiratory problems induced by hay racks. Horses who eat this way manure every two hours, reducing (and probably eliminating) the chance of impaction colic. This high forage diet allows even horses in work to reduce or eliminate grain and still maintain weight. If, as we do, you have horses turned out together and as many boxes as horses, horses will move from box to box, increasing their motion in turnout, which improves the movement of forage through the digestive system and helps horses build and maintain muscle and bone strength. We find the best practice is to fill the feeder by tearing up enough hay from a bale and putting it in the box. You can just drop a chunk of flakes in the box, but this is often extra hard to extract and horses may accidentally flip over the box as they try to pull and tear the hay. In addition, tearing up the hay helps make sure that you can catch undesirable plant matter (e.g. leaves, ferns, etc.) and garbage picked up by the baler. You can also mix cuts of hay or hay from different sources to vary the diet. Horses like this change from time to time and it also makes their digestion more robust. For horse and stable owners, a major benefit is a massive reduction in hay waste. The typical stable not only feeds too little forage, but also wastes at least 13% by feeding hay on the ground (https://www.horseloversmath.com/howtoreducehaywaste/). Feeders like the Slow Feeder Saver reduce waste to 1%. As an example, if we assume feeding 18 lbs per horse per day, an average bale size of 40 lbs and a cost of $7 per bale (or, per pound, $0.14), 365 feeding days per year, the ground feeding waste per horse per year is around $150. To put this in perspective, this is 21 bales of hay you might as well have set on fire. A feeder like the Slow Feeder Saver reduces waste to something like 1%. For stable owners, not only do Slow Feeder Savers cover their cost in around 2 years through waste reduction, they reduce the storage cost for hay by the 21 bales of extra hay that makes up for the waste (roughly 8 extra sq feet per horse). The logistics and labor cost of those extra 21 bales are also nearly eliminated (gas, truck and trailer operations, stacking, unstacking, etc.). This is probably at least another $50 per horse per year. The Slow Feeder Saver is a robust and easily assembled device with only six parts and eight screws. The plastic is very strong and is washable, but because of the way the feeder walls are made (hollow with injection molding openings, it is a good idea to drill holes in the bottom of each piece to ensure good drainage after washing, or to only wash with a washcloth and light, horse safe soap (such as Dawn) mixed with water. They are durable and light enough for one person to drag to different locations (we move them to the shelter during rain and snow storms, for instance, so the horses are encouraged to stay under cover) or you can use a hand truck (ideally a wide one like the type used for appliances). The horses can drag the boxes around as well. Some do, some don't. In the stalls, we ratchet strap the Slow Feeder Saver to the front wall to prevent horses from moving them to a location that clutters up their stall space and makes it hard for them to move or lie down. Grates come powder coated but probably should be painted every one to two years with a non-toxic paint due to the wear created by the horses' lips. In short, this is a product that is great for horses, great for costs and it radically simplifies horse care. Worth every penny. I shudder when I see ground feeding now - hay trampled into dirt, mud, manure or urine soaked shavings is a shocking thing of the past for us.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Idea, but not good for teeth I bought 5 of these from another company before SP started to carry them. They are a great concept and DO slow down the horses. 2 Problems: If your horse has shoes, the grate is a potential hazard as the end of the shoe can get caught on the grate if you have a frustrated horse (which you will since they can't eat so fast) Problem #2, my horses had worn off parts of their teeth from constantly rubbing them against the metal grate. They also ended up with sores on their gums. This a great idea, and I think if they could make the grate out of a "softer" yet durable material…maybe something like the Nibble Net fabric, it would be a home run!
