Why We Love This
The Bite-Lite H-Trap is the newest and most effective horse fly trap on the market today for catching tabanids (also known as greenheads, deer flies, yellow flies, and B-52 bombers). By placing this unique, study trap in a hot, sunny location near your horse paddock, swimming pool, pond, garden, water park, business park, vacation rental, campground, etc., you will start trapping female horse flies who are attracted to the inflated black ball by the infrared signature generated by the heat of the sun. Looking for a blood meal in order to reproduce, the female will try to bite its "victim", and after failing they will fly their typical vertical flight pattern, which in this case is up into the trap’s UV proof plastic collection bin. Each trap covers 2.5 acres or 5 horses.

Horse fly eggs and larvae are found in wet, swampy areas. Stable flies and horn fly eggs and larvae are found in fecal matter, urine soaked bedding, or in the wet, decomposing straw found around round hay bales. Another difference is the way these different flies bite. Signs of horse fly bites are trails of blood from the wound that the horse fly leaves after cutting the skin and pumping in a substance that allows the blood to flow. Stable fly and horn fly bites tend to be less bloody, with much smaller ‘dots’ of blood left after feeding. If you are unsure about what type of flies are present on your property, please call us before purchasing an H-Trap. Another factor to consider before purchasing and/or locating your H-Trap is that certain elements on a property may compete with the effectiveness of one H-Trap. For example, the following could produce more thermal energy or heat signatures than the trap’s black ball and affect the successful location of the trap: blue plastic pool liners, dark horses, metal roofs, other blue or dark objects. If that is the case, we recommend an integrated pest management program, adding lures, white fly sheets, and fly sprays, etc. to your regimen.

Traps all the green heads!
I bought this 5 years ago and it works so well at trapping the green heads and a few others as well. I try a slightly different placement every year and some spots work a little better than others. I think I got it perfect this time! Also took advantage of the 2 year warranty and got some replacement parts due to wear and tear of the base (anchor broke off) and the cone (velcro ripped). Now that I have these green guys under control I just have to keep up with the stable flies.

Very Disappointed
For this price, this trap should certainly be catching lots of horse flies. It did catch a few, but not enough to make any noticeable relief for myself and the horses during the height of the season. I killed more by swatting with my hand than this thing ever caught. I was under the impression that the trap would be specific to horse flies, but it actually catches all kinds of flying insects, so could be hurting the population of beneficial insects on the property, which I am not too happy about either.
A few things I wish I had known before buying: 1. It must be set up in a sunny location. Therefore, if you are hoping to catch deer flies down by the shady creek, it won't work. 2. It has to be placed along the flight path that the horseflies take from the wet breeding areas to your pastures. This can be impossible depending on the layout of you property. 3. If you have dark horses, the horse flies may be more attracted to the dark horses than to the trap. Overall, I am sorely disappointed. I was really hoping to find an eco-friendly solution to the horse and deer fly problem, but turns out that it was a very expensive waste of money.

Lucky if it catches 2 flys
Litterally surprised if I see 2 flys in this thing. Yesterday I had one fly and a bee in it. Don’t waste your money! I ended up buying the $25 odor traps and they are awesome.
P.S. I always empty out the trap at the end of the day so I know how much it catches per day

It works!!
This an excellent horse fly, deer fly, stable fly trap. I have a horse with sensitive skin and when he gets bit by the bugs he scratches all his hair off. So thankful for these kind of solutions!!

It catches lots of flies
I bought this about six weeks ago. I have caught close to 500 flies. I had no idea I had that many flies around my house. I don't live that close to livestock but I do live in a wooded area where there are lots of deer that come through. I was tired of being bit as I was doing yard work by horse flies. So I set this trap up wondering if it would help with that. It has! It seems the population of the horse flies is at least being reduced. Would buy this again in a heartbeat. It's a bit pricey but works great.

Great traps
Just received my third Htrap today, two of which was purchased from SmartPak Equine. living on acre of ground next to a salt marsh where green head breed is tough. However these traps work so well and the flies are so bad I'm going to order a fourth trap. They are easy to put up and take down. If you are skeptical go head and buy if you have green heads, deer flies it's an excellent product. Attached is photographs of the contents of a trap after 3 hours of install, see how good it works.

Excellent fly catcher
Just received this today 06/26/2017. As I was placing it next to my deck, green head flies were attracted to it that fast. I live next to a national wild life refugee/salt marsh. This is the 2nd. one I have purchased even though I only have an acre of ground, the salt marsh is where the Greenheads breed. I would love to attach a video of the amount of flies I have caught. Excellent product.

Not catching bugs
I made a biting fly trap based on the Rutgers Univ plans (which this Bite-Lite is loosely based on), and have used it for 2 years on my farm. It works amazingly well. I bought this trap this spring to expand my field coverage, since I was lazy and didn't want to build a second one. I grant you this Bite-Lite trap is really well made -very sturdy. But it has only caught about 2 flies in the course of several weeks, while my homemade trap has caught handfuls of biting flies. The Bite-Lite is too pricey for the ineffective level.
