Hadley Down Trainer's Coat by SmartPak is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent minus a few small details! I now own two of these coats. I am 5'8, and have broader shoulders so I measured and sized up, expecting to wear my usual gear under a riding coat; I live in Minnesota and ride outside with no cover/indoor, so I'm usually wearing a base layer, fleece, vest and coat along with ear muffs on my helmet and often, a wool buff pulled up over my nose and mouth or around my neck. We have had a warmer winter, but above 20* I am able to wear this coat with just a base layer or wool shirt, no need for the extra two layers. I add a fleece if its below 20* or this weird humidity where it feels colder. This coat is very much like other down coats I have bought for city wear, fabric wise, but hasn't yet gotten holes or pulls despite me going right to it for evening chores and morning turnout. It isn't massively puffy, but it is lovely and warm, and I like the hood. I can see where folks are annoyed with the zipper. I don't have to bend down hugely to get mine zipped (zipper ends mid thigh). You just have to pull both zippers down and hold them down, before starting to zip up. I have similar struggles with any other two way zipper, you get the hang of it after a while! I have washed mine, and did find that one of the rear/bum zipper pulls got twisted despite washing on delicate/cold and drying on the absolute lowest setting, which doesn't impart any noticeable heat to the clothing that I pull out of the dryer. It's annoying to deal with, but the zipper still works. The only issue I am running into with this coat is that the bum zippers seem to end just a bit too low for me. I did buy an XL and a L, and have the problem with both coats - the L is about as slim as I'd be willing to go for a riding coat (5'8, broader shoulders, a bit heavier than normal at 175, thanks COVID) in case I need to layer. For now I am solving this problem with a belt; I just pull the coat up in the back over the belt until the zipper pulls are at my lower back and have no problems with the coat being sucked under my butt while riding. I am considering trying to alter the coats permanently to get rid of the belt, but am nervous about putting a needle through the fabric, as it does seem a bit delicate and I'd worry if it did get caught on something, it would rip. Other than being a bit too long (which is easily enough solved), so far I am extremely happy. I have a riding skirt, and this is definitely preferable when riding my always-ends-up-soaked-and-steaming OTTB and I've been wearing it a ton.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this coat! I just bought this, so I do not know how well it will last, but it's basically the perfect coat in my opinion. I love being able to unzip the back for riding or just walking around. There is tons of room to cover your legs and your saddle. It's plenty warm and easy to layer underneath for super frigid days (northern Michigan). The zip pockets, adjustable hood, wrist cuffs, and separate collar are great! I would say that it fits true to size. I bought the emerald on sale and liked it so much I went back to buy another, but am not doing so as the colorful ones are now sold out. Please keep offering this coat, but more colors would be good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Next Best Thing to My Heated Blanket During the cold months, I tend to not ride or even go out to the barn. I’m cold natured and a thin human so I’m usually uncomfortable and the barn is just a miserable time. I saw this jacket on smartpak and I put it on my list of things to purchase. And I’m SO GLAD I did!! This jacket keeps me WARM. From my neck to my knees!! I am super impressed with how I don’t get overwhelmingly hot when I ride too! I loved it so much I bought a 2nd one in another color ☺️ Thanks smartpak for keeping me warm!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I expected for my first down coat I thought it would be puffier based on the pictures. Sadly, I was mistaken. This coat came in a tiny box, not much larger than a shoe box which alone surprised me. The down is very minimal it's hard to belive it's 200gms. Lastly, and which I'm very sad about, is the zipper is impossible. It comes to right above your knee where you zip it up at and you have to bend over and fumble all around trying to get it to align. Or, you can hike the coat up when you get frustrated. I also wore it outside and I'm worried it won't keep me warm at the barn below 30. I was desperate to get a warmer barn coat and don't want to layer. My other fake fur coats I don't have to layer. I May return it still thinking but I'm desperate for a long winter barn coat. I got it half off and I'm still disappointed. I'd never, ever pay full price for this flat coat. Again, the down is so minimal and very hard to feel beneath the fabric. It would need double the down for cold winters with wind chill in the minus 20's which Texas gets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value I’ve had this a month and the temp has been in the teens to 30s. For the price, this is an awesome and well made jacket keeping me more than warm enough in the barn. It’s too warm to ride in, but good for trails when you’re not moving.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm and functional I was hesitant to buy this jacket. After wearing it to do night check and for early morning rides I cannot believe that I waited so long. The quality is amazing. The length is perfect (5’ tall, 130#, a bit curvy up top and I wear a XS). The fit is very flattering. And it is SO WARM!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT Coat I bought this coat at the end of last "winter season". It's already cold here in Kansas so I've been wearing it again..and I ABSOLUTELY love it. It's warm, comfortable, covers me up so my clothes do not get dirty, anyone wanting a "barn coat" or even a riding coat I would highly recommend. IT's my GO TO every time I do chores. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 rating is the zipper just broke...I called and they are sending me a new coat! GREAT customer service!
