Overview

Why We Love This

Ecovet, available in a fresh scent, is a new alternative to traditional fly products containing pyrethrins or essential oils. Research has shown that certain fatty acids act as insect attractants, while others are repellents. Ecovet uses a proprietary mixture of naturally occurring fatty acids that confuses and overwhelms the insect’s normal directional ability, so the insect is unable to locate your horse as its next victim. It’s like having a GPS system that is shouting confusing and conflicting directions at you … until you finally give up.

Available in a 4 oz Mini Spray Bottle, an 18 oz. Spray Bottle, and a Gallon Refill Bottle (1 Gallon Contains Enough Ecovet to Refill an 18 oz. Bottle 7 Times!)

Ecovet Fly Repellent is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 220.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great spray for flys I bought this and have used it only a few times but the flys do not bother the horses.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Concerned about safety! Although I *really* was hoping to like Ecovet, I can’t in good conscience give it a higher rating. We live in the hot, humid Southeastern US, with terrible black flies, deer flies, and horse flies. Nothing works more than 12-24 hours, even the “sweat proof” more expensive brands. I thought Ecovet would be a wonderful change from chemical sprays containing pyrethrin, etc.; however, I’m seriously concerned over the safety of this product. My 2 yr. old mustang moved to the back corner of his stall this morning, coughing and blowing his nose, while I was spraying my QH mare nearby. If the wind shifts and catches the spray, blowing it toward me, it burns my eyes and nose, and causes me to cough. I’ve felt nauseous after spraying 4 animals, even though I wear gloves and a mask. In addition, the “overspray” KILLS any grass! With all of the warnings on the label, as well as my body’s reaction, and my horses’ and donkeys’ aversion to Ecovet, I don’t think I’ll be using it in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great but smells FOUL Pros: it works great to keep regular flies, mosquitoes, and no-see-ums off your horse and anything it touches. Cons: It smells FOUL. My horse coughs and sneezes, it triggers asthma attacks in everyone around you, it lingers around the barn... It also attracts horseflies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New favorite! I wish I had found this sooner! The Ecovet Fly Repellent is my new favorite fly spray for several reasons. First, this fly spray actually works! I apply it every morning and feel that my horses are still comfortable until the following day. Secondly, it is great for my sensitive-skinned Thoroughbreds. Naturally occurring fatty acids in this product interfere with insects' GPS systems. Therefore, the insects are confused and fly in the other direction. Lastly, it only requires a very small amount. I do one spray on each leg, over the withers, and over the hind quarters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't be turned off by the smell! I've been using this spray for at least three years now, and nothing else compares. It works completely different than most fly sprays, as it uses fatty acids to make your horse unattractive to biting insects. Those fatty acids are harmless but can make you and your horse sneeze when you first apply it (I've never had any long term negative effects). It doesn't irritate my horse's very sensitive skin, and a little goes a long way! It is the only thing I've ever seen actually repel the terrible springtime gnats up here in New England. It definitely works better the longer you use it, as the flies learn to just avoid your horse all together after a while. As long as I'm not bathing my horse a lot, etc, I only need to put it on like twice a week, which makes it last longer. (I recommend putting it on legs, underbelly, chest, and just behind the ears.) I keep a different "natural" type spray around as a backup, or for added protection when I'm going to trail ride, or it's a particularly buggy day. I don't buy sprays for how they smell, good smelling ones can be nice, but effectiveness is my priority, and this one is very effective.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great but smelly This seems to work well but you have to hold your breath so you don’t pass out from chemical inhalation.
Date published: 2022-06-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fly spray that works! Just don't breathe it in! I just bought this fly spray- and wow, it actually works! I only had to spray it on my horse once for our entire shoeing session, compared to reapplying every 10-15 minutes with all the natural and pesticide fly sprays I've tried. Also, I only had to use a few spritzes so it's quite economical. However, it does cause minor respiratory irritation if breathed in, especially with me being an asthmatic. So I always hold my breath when spraying and also don't apply it near my horses's face as it makes him sneeze too. But to me, having a less toxic formula that actually works is so worth it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Strong smell - difficult bottle I am about to find out if it works because the spray bottle was so difficult I had to wipe it on my horse and managed to coat myself as well. The sprayer was too long, and the nozzle on/off was not labeled and only twisted in one direction. I have never been stymied by a sprayer before.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wish it worked better. Bought this a month ago and have tried it for a few weeks and am not as impressed as I wanted to be. Other reviewers stated ot smells bad and it does!!! Burns my nostrils and I can't imagine what it does to my horse. Wish I bought the small bottle first but was so convinced by the ratings and reviews that bought the big bottle. Won't be using rest of it...doesn't last very long once it's on the horse and the smell is just too much.
Date published: 2021-08-23
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works OK but very irritating to lungs I bought the smallest size to trial, I think it works pretty well, I don't need to use much, I just spray on the pasterns good, a little up the leg and under the belly primarily. The smell is different, neither good or bad. But the spray is very irritating to my lungs and throat, and also to my horses, it seems. 2 of my horses normally stand for spray without a halter, but the one tries to get away when I use this spray. The other one does a lot of blowing/sneezing to clear his sinuses. I definitely wouldn't spray anywhere near the face. I hold my breath and try to get done quickly, but it still makes me cough a little. I think I'll use the rest as a wipe instead of spray product.
Date published: 2021-08-19
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Actually works! I was skeptical that an all natural product would work but I tried it. It's smell is overpowering, you will choke if you inhale it, all the other horses snort and sneeze when you spray it, but it works. Really well. Shockingly well. Just stand upwind and out of the barn when you spray.
Date published: 2021-08-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only fly spray that works Although this fly spray has the worst smell, practically makes you choke when you spray it, and kills if you inhale the smallest bit of it, it is seriously the only fly spray that works. I wish the bottle was bigger for how much product you get and how much you pay. For like $20 a bottle, I’d rather it be the size of the normal white bottles Bronco spray rather than this size, but that’s becides the point.
Date published: 2021-07-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from This Really Works! Love this stuff, the flies hate it! Best fly repellent I have used in a long time....
Date published: 2021-06-30
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It really works! This is the only fly spray I'll buy anymore, because although it is expensive per ounce, it actually WORKS, and a little goes a long way. In fact, the strong odor will make you use it sparingly. I stand upwind and spray it on my guy's legs and rump, well away from his nose/mouth (to shield him from the smell). It keeps the flies at bay far longer without reapplication than any other fly spray I've tried. Keep converting folks at my barn, too. Try it, you'll like it!
Date published: 2021-06-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really works! This spray really does work well keeping the flys and gnats off my horses. A little goes a long way. I just lightly spray the ears, legs, and belly and flys don't land! It does have a strong odor as other people have mentioned but it isn't really an issue since this works with only a light spray, the horse doesn't need to be drenched, like with some other sprays.
Date published: 2021-05-26
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome product! Have been using this since last year, we find it very productive!
Date published: 2021-04-19
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not super Despite saying new better smell, this product's smell is very chemical and nearly gags/burns you if you inhale it, which is hard to avoid if you are in a barn. I can't imagine with that strong of a burning sensation in my airway that the product is ok on the skin? Also, I bought two bottles and they both lasted only a few days before the entire contents leaked out the top when they tipped over. Now both my barn and my trailer tack room reek of this stuff and I don't have fly spray, not that I wanted to really use this stuff. It certainly isn't what came to mind with the name "EcoVet"
Date published: 2020-09-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really works! I tried other fly sprays, like ultrashield, which didn't do squat. This one definitely has a different smell, but it works wonderfully. Plus, I've found that even a small volume does wonders. Definitely recommended.
Date published: 2020-09-01
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Respiratory concerns If you have asthma/COPD/emphysema DO NOT use this product. Your inhaler won't help you. Very irritating to lung tissue! The ingredients are not as innocent as they sound.
Date published: 2020-08-20
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works! I bought this under a month ago but the very first time I ever used it I feel like it definitely kept the flies away. my horse went from stomping and tail swishing to standing quietly. It is strong though and had other people coughing at the barn so the scent does linger a little.
Date published: 2020-08-11
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well on SOME flies but makes us COUGH It seems like this works well on regular barn flies but NOT deer flies when trail riding. It also makes me and two of my horses cough even when applied outside. I like the concept but can’t get my mind around if it’s so great why does it make us cough??
Date published: 2020-08-10
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good results for sweet itch I use this on my horse and it helps keep no seeums away so my horse is a lot less itchy and no longer scratches himself raw. Hes a much happier horse now.
Date published: 2020-08-08
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very strong smell made me cough and horses sneeze. Poor insect control
Date published: 2020-08-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Neither horrible nor fabulous I bought an 18 ounce bottle of Ecovet almost a month ago. As of today, the bottle is almost empty. Although the manufacturer says it last 2-3 days, Georgia is hot and humid. Our horses have to be rinsed daily to prevent heat stress. So, I had to apply Ecovet every day. The good thing was that there was a definite decrease in the number of flies bothering my horse within 2 minutes of application. I never used the original scent and have no way to compare it to the new scent. But, do heed the reviews that say the scent is very strong. The first time I applied the product, I sprayed it on my horse in the barn aisleway. My horse started blowing and other horses in the vicinity started coughing and blowing. Every time I applied it after that, I sprayed Ecovet on my horse outside, at a distance from the barn. I also learned to be mindful of the direction of any breeze (no matter how light) so as not to asphyxiate myself.
Date published: 2020-08-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely works! I'm just finishing my first time purchase of the 18oz bottle of Ecovet and it works so great I've ordered the gallon size for more economical refills. I tested this product on one side of my horse and my old fly spray on the other side during a one hour hack in our very buggy woods and waterways area. NOTHING even landed on the Ecovet side of my horse!!! The new scent is the only one I have used, and although strong, my horse nor I found it overwhelming.
Date published: 2020-07-12
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Works Just used Ecovet for the first time today and was delighted to see that worked very well on one of my horses that us particularly bothered by flies. I would recommend that you spray outdoors as the scent is fairly strong.
Date published: 2020-07-09
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works but VERY strong smell. This spray works well on the insects but the smell is awful. It is not a horrible smell but rather VERY strong and lingers. You have to spray downwind or it would be way too much for you or the horse. I have had it cause respiratory issues in both horses and people. I had one horse that every single time I tried ecovet on him he started coughing. I stopped using the product and it went in the trash.
Date published: 2020-07-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works This stuff does work but read the directions. You only spray on the belly and the legs. It says on the back of the head but to "use care". I would not spray the back of the head. It does have a very strong smell, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. My boss got it for her sensitive stallion who seemed to be always attacked by flies. I would treat his legs and belly with this and he barely swishes a tail when he was turned out. I am definitely buying this for my sensitive mare.
Date published: 2020-06-21
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wrks well enough What detracts me from this product is the smell--to me it's nasty and takes my breath away!
Date published: 2020-06-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My horse is sensitive to many fly sprays. I used all natural, water based ones with minimal effectiveness after a few hours. I switched to Ecovet this spring & can see a noticeable difference in the absence of flies on my horse. His skin is happy too.
