I take that good review back.
I LOVED these when I first bought them. They are the most comfortable half chap I've owned. After a year of owning them, the love affair is OVER.
The velcro closure at the top is ridiculous. As soon as this starts to weaken even a little, the chap pops open and flaps in the breeze. Nothing can induce these to stay closed for an entire ride.
They would be perfect, if not for the terrible design.

Comfy but zipper placement is a problem
I just got them and sadly need to return. the size was perfect but the zipper is hitting the spur rest on the matching paddock boots and it makes a clicking sound when I walk. I tried pulling them up but the catching and clicking on the zipper is making me crazy.

Great once you can get them on!
I love the fit of these sporty half chaps, but do budget an extra 15 minutes before ride time to get them zipped! The back zipper makes these difficult than my previous side zip ones and you have to practically contort your body to get into them - especially with cold fingers! Worth it once they're on, though.

Sporty, but still hard to put on after 2 months
Good feel, sporty look. However with the zipper starting at the bottom, they are VERY difficult to put on still, even after 2 months use. I wear them because I have them, but if I had another choice, I would choose that.

Sizing
Real disappointed in the sizing. I'm a 14 wide, 15 tall got the small/short 14.5/16.5 and they don't zip without pinching me and were too tall. I was really excited to get these, but I guess I just have a weird leg size. =/

Comfortable and thin!
I was worried that the non-leather would make the chaps bunchy and awkward, but they ride very nicely! Thin material allows the leg to really feel the horse, and the grip of the fabric keeps the leg stable. Easy to walk in too. Requires minimal break-in time, had to clamp the sides shut to zip the first couple of times but then everything fit nicely.

Breathable and great for summer!
I had been eyeing these for a while, because my leather half chaps are so hot in the summer. These are like a stretchy thick sock, and just way more comfortable in general. I used the measurement chart on the Ariat website to make sure I was getting the right size and they fit perfectly!

Best Half Chaps for Endurance
These are by far my favorite half chaps I've had in the last 30 years! They fit true to size and are like wearing a sock that's durable and offers protection. They breath very well and I can actually wear them with trainers/running shoes without any rubs or slipping of the shoe out of the chap. These are a great upgrade from the Terrain II half chaps. My only complaint is that the zipper is hard to zip. It runs smoothly, it's just awkward having it at the back rather than the size. So far I have 300 endurance miles on these and they still look like new. I hope Ariat keeps this style as part of their core line. They're great!

Look great, but some design flaws
Love the look of these Ascent half-chaps, but unfortunately, not a great fit. I am a petite adult, (5 ft 1 in), which makes finding gear difficult, since things are designed for taller people. I have a 13.25 in calf, but am only 14.5 inches at the back of the knee. My prior Ariat Flex suede half chaps were size SS (since that fits best with my calf) and we super comfy and fit well. I am really in between sizes, though. If i could have an XS for calf size but really need a XXS for knee height. My calf size is too big youth half chaps, but my lower leg is too short for the adult.
Am a fan of Ariat overall and had a great pair of the suede Flex half chaps, which fit like a glove, but they were destroyed by a naughty dog, and now this style is no longer made. So, I'm now on the hunt for my new favorite. I tried the Breeze, which were the closest to my old style, but these have issues, too. I was really hoping I would love
These Ascent chaps look amazing, but have a couple of notable problems, however. One is that the zipper is a "bottom up." This makes it much harder to get on/start zipping. I found it very difficult to get them around my Ariat (heritage) paddock boot. I do not have the matching ascent boot for this half-chap, and really, should not need to. The other, is that the zipper is a posterior zipper (behind the calf) and not a side zip. With this, the zipper (particularly the zipper toggle) sits DIRECTLY behind the knee and presses/pinches uncomfortably with any bend in the knee. Because of anatomy and positioning with riding, it is even more important that the zipper be a "top down." Not sure why the design team found that they wanted it this way, with a pressure point directly in the soft spot of your knee. The final thing i've noted, is that Ariat seems to have "cheeped out" and switched to using velcro on the zipper protection flap, rather than the secure snap. Velcro gets dirty and gummed up and stops holding it's stick after a bit, and a snap always works. Furthermore, with expensive gear, you should be getting higher quality than just some velcro. I have noted this on several other of their products recently, including the Breeze half chaps. Though this isn't a substantial fit or functionality issue, it is a design issue I noted.
