Best half chaps ever
I love these chaps! I've had my pair for almost 5 years and still going strong. They fit like they should. They are snug at first around the ankle but after a few rides they are perfect. I know so many people who have these chaps with Ariat Terrain II boots. You only hear from the people with larger ankles. For the rest of us, they are perfect. Please do bring them back in all colors!

Love them!
These are super well made and fair priced for the quality. I was nervous after reading reviews about the snaps but have no problems with them! They are pretty tall so someone with shorter calves may have trouble. I’m 5’8 and they hit me right at the top of my calf at the beginning of the knee bend. Overall very pleased with them and would purchase again!

Perfect for day to day and schooling shows!
I've had these for over two years now and couldn't be happier. They are extremely comfortable and stretchy! I've worn these to shows and none have been to wiser that I'm wearing chaps meant for trail riding. Held up pretty good aside from some cosmetic snags in the mesh on the front which isn't noticeable unless you're up close. My one complaint is the snaps can be hard to undo every once in a while.

I really wanted to love these.....
I just received the Ariat Terrain II Half Chaps and sadly I am sending them back. I chose to ignore the reviews that stated the ankle is too small. There was no way they were going to zip down to the bottom around my Terrain paddock Boot. For reference, I wear a women's size 9 Terrain boot and ordered the "Large Short" because I like my half chaps to fit a little loose in the width and according to the size chart, this size selection was going to be ideal.
Even if they weren't too narrow at the bottom, the tab that fits under the heel of your boot is stitched in the wrong place to fit under the Terrain boot heel. It's too far back by a good 1.5". I hope I'm making sense with my description. Essentially if I could zip them all the way down to the ankle, the tab would be ruined quickly because it would be directly under the heel and not in the "heel groove" as it should be.
On the plus side, I tried them in spite of the negative reviews I read knowing SmartPak makes it easy to return items that don't work out so I am grateful to have that safety net!
I did not try to put them on with regular paddock boots just because I bought them specifically to use with my Terrains to have a nice, matching casual set. If you are very petite and are using them with regular English style paddock boots maybe they would work?
As far as quality is concerned, I didn't see anything to suggest they wouldn't be durable but of course I didn't actually use them at all. No issues with the zipper or snaps that I saw.

Very Frustrating
I bought these a year ago and it wasn't long before I had trouble with a snap not wanting to release. I have to use a flat head screw driver to pop it off. The new thing now is that it doesn't want to zip. There is no indication that there is anything wrong with the zipper. Sometimes I can get it to zip but some days I just can't on my own and I am left with raw thumbs and irritability. The mesh fades to a purplish black. Everything else has held up and they are comfortable in the heat, but that just doesn't make up for the faulty hardware.

Works well (but hard to zip at first)
It might just be because I have monsterous winter boots to put these over but goodness was zipping them the first few times I struggle. I think the first time I struggled for a good five minutes before I managed to zip them over the boot. I think it's because, as others have said, the ankle is very tight. They work great now that I've used them a few times, though.
Just be aware that getting them on the first couple times might prove difficult, especially if you have big winter boots to go with them because you live in the midwest and it's cold half of the year. :)

I didn't expect to be so happy with these!
Purchased a pair of these chaps in Black XL in July. With a 17 1/2" calf, I've "outgrown" my tall boots and quickly realized I needed something suitable for a mini trial. Funds didn't allow for the tall boots I wanted to buy, so I made a last minute decision on chaps I thought would "do the job". Not only have these proven to look surprisingly nice, but they are durable, breathable, and very comfortable! I ride up to four horses a day and do everything from dressage to jumping to hacking on rough overgrown trails and these have been great for everything!
Product features:
MATERIALS: The fabric and mesh are very breathable and lightweight, but don't feel cheap. The stretch panel forms to your leg and stays that shape between rides, like it memorizes the curve of your calf - feels custom! Suede seems good quality and very durable. 2 1/2 months of owning them, riding more than a dozen times a week and they still look brand new. Very easy to clean too.
HARDWARE: The snaps and zippers are rugged and designed to last. They get easier to open and close with time, but definitely take a little strength. Would not recommend these chaps for someone with mobility/fine motor difficulties. That said, I broke a finger last week and have still been able to get them on and off by myself every day... don't tell the doc ;)
FIT: These are a very tall chap and may not be suitable for short riders. I am 5'8" with a long leg that dressage trainers love and normally order extra tall in everything below my waist. I ordered an XL in the regular height and they fit perfectly. I have a 17.5" calf and am 19.5" from the back of my knee (bent at 90 degrees) to the floor. A Tall would have been far too tall. Calf stretches a good bit with time, but does not stretch easily the first time you put them on. Give them a shot, even if they seem too tight at first! P.S. Vacuuming the house is a great way to try out new boots or chaps without getting them dirty!
OVERALL: I am absolutely thrilled with them. I hate making last minute decisions and panic over the silliest things before a show, but I am truly very happy with these chaps! Hoping they last me a long time like I think they will!
Photos from my dressage test (USEA BegNov A, schooling show). Wearing these chaps and Ariat Heritage Paddock Boots.

Zipper is a dealbreaker!
I have the first incarnation of this half chap and would happily still be riding in them if they hadn't finally given in to the 5 plus years of daily riding and abuse I've subjected them to.
It was a no-brainer to buy this item when I finally faced that I'd have to buy new half chaps. As soon as I got this new pair I noticed the change in quality - these are not nearly as nice as my old pair. The leather is far thinner, which is probably nice for summer months but not promising for getting another 5 years out of the replacement.
The zippers are TERRIBLE. They're very cheap wide plastic. I'll be returning without even putting them on over boots. I tried to zip the chap on my leg and the zipper stops at the top of the chap. I could not even zip the zipper with the chap lying flat on a table in front of me. This is such a bummer as my old pair were "old reliable" maybe I can find a cobbler to fix my old pair as surely that $40 would be better spent than on these.
Sorry Ariat, you lost my repeat business on this one.

Perfect match with terrain boot
I’ve been a huge fan of the terrain boots for many many years. In the past I’ve had a hard time finding a half chap that fit over the high instep. When my two pairs of old half chaps zippers split, I found these. Their perfect and I love them so far. Make sure you measure your calf for correct sizing! Can’t yet comment on durability since I’ve only worn them a few times so far
