Kimchi and I first met while touring with Cavalia in Asia. I was working as a groom, spending my days getting the horses show-ready, warming them up before performances, and cooling them down afterward. My first tour city was Taipei, Taiwan, which also happened to be Kimchi’s second stop on the show.
Before joining Cavalia, Kimchi was born and raised in New South Wales, Australia, where he was originally started as an endurance horse. He was later purchased as a trick-riding prospect, though it quickly became clear that the traveling show life wasn’t quite suited for him. I would always advocate for him and made it clear that I was interested in adopting him whenever they were ready.
Two years after I met him and on my very last day working with the show in Irvine, CA, they told me he was retiring and that he was mine if I wanted. The moment they offered him to me will forever be one of the most memorable days of my life. Almost ten years later, and Kimchi is still thriving and living his best life in retirement!
