Grace, Grit & Chivalry: Celebrating the Ladies of the Joust

Posted on: May 10, 2026 by Nancy Buonamano

If you’re a horse person who has ever visited a Renaissance Faire, chances are you’ve wandered past the Tilt Yard and paused to watch a Joust in action. And if you’re anything like me, you may have found yourself becoming something of a devoted follower of a favorite troupe, amazed every time you have the opportunity to watch them perform.

Previously, I wrote about one such troupe, The Jousters, who I watch perform at both the New York Renaissance Faire (NYRF) and the Carolina Renaissance Festival (CRF) – here you will find a tutorial of sorts on the knights and what a typical day at the Joust entails, and here I dive into the horses, their training, care and the unique bond they share with their people, as well as what inspires someone to pursue the demanding life of a knight.

And yes, the men are truly admirable and talented. The horses are near-mythical in their presence – thundering down the lists with a power and grace right out of a medieval legend. Yet it is the women who add another layer entirely, occupying a class all their own as they weave pageantry, horsemanship, combat and tradition together in ways that prove the magic of the joust extends far beyond the clash of lance and shield.

Countess Cordelia, Lady of Chivalry

Serving as master of ceremonies, and truly the glue which binds the entire extravaganza together, the Countess guides the audience through each contest with commanding presence and effortless poise, weaving the day’s events into a cohesive narrative. She introduces the competitors and their steeds, explains the traditions, engages with guests and keeps the energy of the Tilt Yard alive. Equal parts storyteller and orchestrator, she provides the rhythm that allows every moment of the Joust to unfold with purpose and clarity.

While knights prepare for their next pass and horses are readied along the lists, Countess Cordelia shapes the tone of the arena, knowing when to heighten anticipation, invite laughter or let the weight of competition settle over the crowd. And as the final joust reaches its dramatic conclusion, she steps away from the role of narrator to join the action herself, reminding audiences that her contributions extend well beyond the spoken word.

Lady Angel of Azarath

Before the first lance is ever lowered in combat, Lady Angel takes to the field to demonstrate horsemanship through a variety of mounted games. More than entertainment, these exhibitions illustrate the balance, trust and precision required between horse and rider while paying tribute to skills that once helped warriors prepare for battle.

Her popularity is immediately evident the moment she enters the Tilt Yard. Whether greeted by longtime fans or first-time visitors, she consistently draws loud and enthusiastic reactions from the crowd. Partnering with one of the knights throughout the day’s events, she combines exceptional horsemanship with charisma and showmanship, making every appearance as captivating as it is memorable.

Lady Magnolia, Squire

One of the true joys of following this troupe over the years has been watching Lady Magnolia grow into her role. As the daughter of one of the knights, she has long been a familiar presence around the Tilt Yard, gradually taking on new responsibilities with confidence, determination and an obvious passion for the craft.

Her journey reflects something especially meaningful: the continuation of tradition. With three families and multiple generations working side by side, The Jousters embody the passing of knowledge from one era to the next, and Lady Magnolia represents that legacy in motion.

For the young girls lining the fence of the Tilt Yard, she offers something equally valuable - the chance to see themselves reflected in the story unfolding before them. In an arena often associated with knights and warriors, her presence is a quiet but powerful reminder that courage, perseverance and grit belong to everyone.

Lady Morgan

Positioned right in the heart of the action is Lady Morgan, whose quick wit and engaging personality make every visit to the Tilt Yard memorable. Welcoming guests with humor and enthusiasm, she offers everything from flags to collectable pins (choose your knight wisely, lest you earn a playful round of boos!) to shields broken during the day’s competition.

What many spectators may not realize is just how physically demanding her role truly is. Rarely stationary, she spends the day traversing steep bleachers, weaving through crowds and racing from one side of the arena to the other while carrying an impressive assortment of merchandise. Yet she accomplishes it all with an infectious smile and good-natured banter, turning simple purchases into interactions guests remember long after the final lance has shattered.

In Conclusion

While the thunder of hooves and clink of metal may first capture the audience’s attention, it is people like these women who ensure that visitors leave remembering not just the competition, but also the sense of camaraderie, community and craftsmanship that bring it to life.

The same can be said for the stewards, both women and men, whose contributions are every bit as vital to the atmosphere of the Joust. Equal parts guardian, entertainer and ambassador, they embody the same humor, passion and fighting spirit that define the troupe, coupled with an unmistakable love for what they do. Their easy rapport with the audience and unwavering commitment to the event make them just as much a part of the story as the knights charging down the lists. Whether keeping a watchful eye on the yard, interacting with the crowd or adding to the day’s lighthearted banter, they remind us that every role – no matter how visible or behind the scenes – helps create the immersive world that audiences return to year after year.

Together, they all remind us that grace, grit and chivalry are not embodied by the knights alone, but by every individual whose dedication transforms the Tilt Yard into an unforgettable experience.
