3-Ingredient Dog Treats for Sensitive Stomachs
I made this recipe for one very important (and very fluffy) reason: my Bernese Mountain Dog, Argos. Argos has a sensitive stomach, which means store-bought treats don’t always love him back, so I found myself on a bit of an “I guess I’m baking now” journey.
I’m not usually the type to spend hours in the kitchen tweaking recipes, but for him I will absolutely roll up my sleeves. To me, there’s nothing better than rewarding my dog and knowing it won’t cause him any issues later. And thankfully, these treats are ridiculously simple (like, “I can do this even on a lazy day” simple) which is the kind of baking I can feel confident in.
What I Used:
- 3 cups almond flour*
- 1 ¼ cup of water
- ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
* Double check that your almond flour is 100% pure almonds with no added sweeteners. I recommend staying away from flour blends or keto-friendly alternatives that contain xylitol, as it is highly toxic to dogs
Steps:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Start by adding the three ingredients into a large mixing bowl and combining with a spoon, spatula, or clean hands. Mix until the dough starts to hold together nicely, like a soft (not sticky) play-dough consistency. (If it feels too dry you can add a tiny splash of water, or if it feels too wet sprinkle in a little more flour. Once it’s ready, gently form it into one large ball.
- Next, place your large ball of dough on a flat, parchment-lined surface like a counter, a baking sheet, a cutting board, etc. Put a sheet of wax paper over the top of the dough to keep it from sticking to your rolling pin and roll out the dough to a thickness about ¼ of an inch. Thinner treats will be crunchier while slightly thicker will be a little softer inside. You can customize the recipe for your dog’s preferences.
- Now cut! If you have cookie cutters or a pizza cutter those would probably work great! For non-bakers like me, I found even a butter knife can cut the flat slab of dough into your desired shapes. For me, those desired shapes were all squares. (I sometimes need to remind myself that these are for Argos and he’s not going to care what they look like, which takes a lot of pressure off.)
- Remove the extra dough from around your cut out shapes, this dough can be reformed into a ball, rolled flat, and cut again and again until every bit is used up!
- Once all your dough has been cut and formed, place your cookie shapes onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet and place in your preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the treats cool for about 10 minutes.
I love being able to make treats myself especially when it’s for a dog like Argos who needs a little extra care. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it feels good knowing exactly what ingredients I’m feeding. Plus, seeing how much he enjoys them is always the best! I hope your dog loves these as much as Argos does!
