Ride as comfortably as tall boots!
I have yet to find a pair of half chaps that give me a comparable feeling to tall boots, until these!!
I did have to size down (true measurements are 16w/17h, but that size felt gappy and loose, so I purchased a pair of 15/17, and they are perfect! Snug enough that you may need help zipping them the first few rides, but the fit is so worth the work!
I can't speak to durability yet, as I've only logged 2 rides with them so far!

Nice looking
These are very nice chaps but I had to return them twice. The first pair was too short and the second did not fit my leg well. If they fit you and you like a softer chap, I recommend them. They just weren’t a good fit on my leg.

Great quality for the price.
These half chaps are made very well, and have a decent thickness of leather for everyday hard wear! I gave four stars because of sizing; years ago they seemed to run very large and now they run a little on the small side. If you have slightly larger than average calves, or wear them with hiking styled paddock boots with wider ankles, I would recommend going up a size with the width. The height seems to run true to size and they do not have a true Spanish top, if that is what you are looking for elegance and slenderizing. These half chaps are hearty and some what pretty or handsome(gender neutral). If you like or love them, I would buy a second pair at SmartPak's low price!

4 years later and they're still fantastic!
I bought these half chaps 4 years ago and they're easily the best pair I've had. The full grain leather and elastic panel are comfortable on your leg and provide a really nice fit. The zipper and snap button closure top/bottom are tough- I definitely have let mud aggregate in these before and after cleaning they continue to hold up. These chaps are easy to care for and look great with a bit of cleaner or conditioner. I hope my pair lasts even longer but if for some reason they didn't I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again!

Two defective pairs
I tried ordering 2 pairs of these and both were defective. The first pair came with a zipper that wouldn't close if the teeth weren't at a certain angle. The second pair had a snap that broke right out of the bag.

Nice construction
I bought these a month or so ago. The fit is excellent, I usually have to order the tallest height in everything and actually had to exchange them for the next size down! It’s very convenient that they come in so many height and calf sizes. The zipper is nice and heavy duty. My only complaint is the leather on the inside is a bit thick and stiff. I’m a professional and wear my half chaps every day and it’s taken a bit to get the inside to supple up. Rest of it broke in very quickly.

super high quality !
We buy theses for my growing teenage daughter year after year. They are gorgeous and super high quality. The topline looks like a tall boot. Also their size option are plentiful. Worth the $$ !!

great fit but the snaps break
I love the way these chaps fit my leg. However, the snaps on both of the chaps broke after a year! I would've expected much better quality from Tredstep. I really wanted to love these. I hope tredstep fixes the issue with the durability of the snaps.

Love them...but the quality is questionable
I have had at least three pairs of these and I love the fit. They are so nice and break in well. However each pair I get lasts shorter and shorter periods of time. My first pair lasted four years with me riding three-six horses a day. My other pairs have lasted maybe a year or two with me riding a few times a week and my most recent pair has been a year with me riding everyday. Within the last week I went from perfectly functioning half chaps to chaps with a broken elastic to go under the boot and three of the four snaps are broken. I’m very sad but will most likely order another pair as the fit is so good.

Holding up so far
I was looking for something durable for days when I don’t want to be in tall boots all day, but also tidy enough for a professional dressage training barn. These fit the bill. No problem with sizing at all- fit right away. Good zippers. Only part I don’t like is that the bottom right snap is a real bear to get snapped, hopefully it will break in. They stay zipped and give a little support, but nothing like a good pair of dress boots. Holding up to heavy use nicely so far.

excellent quality
I have larger sized calves (17.5-18) and I am 5'8" (calf length=(15..5) so I was very happy to receive my order for 17/16-Mocha Brown. The fit was great and of course I get assisted with pulling up the zipper until they "stretch out". Very glad there are sizes versus (S,M,L,XL) which is always a dice roll for me.

Love these half-chaps!
I have had these for a little over a month. I followed the measuring chart for the size and they fit great. They were hard to zip up the first 2 times cuz they were very tight to start. But they loosen with use and now they zip with ease. They stay up, are sturdy, so far have not twisted when riding and they look sharp. Highly recommend.

Order your size or up, not less
So here's the deal folks. THESE CHAPS DO NOT STRETCH BEYOND THE SIZE YOU ORDER THEM FOR. Whatever size you order is assumed to be your exact size or larger. So let's say you order a size 17" calf? You'll receive a half chap that is 16" wide and stretches to 17" wide. (I actually measured and tested this.) Why do they do this? So that you get the right amount of compression, stability and close contact in your leg, which is actually nice when you're able to get it right. So be sure to order exactly your size or up (if you're in half inch increments). They say that these half chaps are supposed to fit tightly and be difficult to zip until you break them in. BUT this is impossible if the chaps are less than your exact size -- you'll murder your hands and fingers before being able to zip them up. That said, great quality leather, and everything else about these half chaps is great. Gotta send mine back, but Smartpak's got my back I'm sure.

Sizing was off
I generally have a hard time finding half chaps so I tried these as they have a lot of size options. My calf is 15” and height is 16” so I ordered the 15/16. While the height was perfect, I couldn’t even come close to closing it at the calf. Had to send them back. Also, for the price, I expected better quality leather.

3 Whole inches too small in calf!!!!
This was a very irritating experience. I ordered these in the 17 inch calf. It was pretty clear the second I wrapped these around my leg they were not going to zip, not even close. Curious, I thought. So, I measured my calf again. It is 16 3/4 with tights. So I measured the half chaps. 14 inches!!!! So irritating. This is the 3rd time I've tried a Tredstep product only to find the size marked is definitely not the size you get. I'm grateful that Smartpak offers free returns, but this is a waste of everyone's time and money.

I just bought these. I had a pair of old (15 years)chaps that finally had to be replaced. I hope i get just as much use out of these. The leather is a good quality, and they fit really well wirhout alot of breaking in.

strange fit
I returned these and went back to the Ariats. I found that these were cut strangely. The curve of the calf did not start until a few inches above my actual calf so I had to squash the chap down around my ankle in order to zip it up the leg. It seemed like it was too long between the bottom and where the natural curve of the calf is. Sorry they didnt work as they seemed to be nice quality and would have fit except for this. I wear a slim tall.

Weird Fit
I purchased these in the size that should've fit me, it did not. I returned them and got another size that should've fit (according to the Tredstep size chart), it did not. They were way to narrow in the calf and too long for the height. The leather quality seemed good. I returned both pairs back.

Not as good as they used to be
I've owned multiple pairs of these half-chaps and the quality has gone significantly downhill over the past decade (previously I would have rated these half-chaps at 5-stars). The leather is stiffer and the cut is not as defined, specifically around the ankle (lots of excess leather).They will do for winter riding, but I will not purchase again.

Beautiful chaps! Runs small
I bought those nice looking chaps in a wide calf with the hopes they would fit my extra wide calves and small ankles! I have found that I am so not a fan of the zip down feature. My right calf is almost an inch and a half wider than the left so the right one doesn’t fit at all! I am so sad but I am going to keep them in the hopes that with a 20 pound weight loss I will be able to wear them! I would recommend them if you have normal sized calves but for wide? Beware! They run much smaller than indicated

I wore these for the first time last night (1/30/18). It was a trick getting them on. They were VERY snug. I expected that, but they were designed for people with more refined and delicate ankles than mine. Getting the zipper to go past my ankle took some serious doing. Once I got them on, all I can say is AWESOME!! They were a second skin that allowed me to communicate effectively through my leg. An absolute dream to ride in. I recommend buttoning the ankle strap and then zipping them. Having the ankle strap closed was the trick that got the zipper past my ankle. The ankle "thing" is the reason behind the four star rating.

Unfortunate choice for me
I ordered the next size up than how my legs measured knowing my legs swell during the day. It still wasn't enough. I struggled with the zipper on several occasions and finally gave up. I never did get them on. They appeared to be good quality and the leather felt nice.

Happy as expected
My riding instructor recommended these because she's had her pair for 7 years and has loved them. I did my measurements and my calf was 15 1/2 inches without any pants over it so I ordered a 16 calf but they were definitely too big. I returned them and went a size down and they fit great. Even though they are still new, they stretch pretty well to fit my calf. Very comfortable. They provide good grip behind the girth. Easy to clean too! Very happy so far. I expect I will have them for years to come.
