Sizing
To ensure your Tipperary body protector offers the optimum level of protection, it is important
that it fits correctly.
What you Need:
- A soft fabric measure tape with inches or centimeters. Don’t have one? You can download
and make your own here. All you need is a pair of scissors and clear tape. - A friend to help.
- Wear a T-shirt.
How to Measure:
- This vest requires measurements of the chest,
waist and spine. Remember, the Competitor vest
is designed to be adjustable. - Chest: Under the arms at the widest part
across the chest. - Waist: At natural waist.
- Spine: Measure from the base of the neck
to where your belt would sit. - Note that the “long” version of the vest adds
approximately 2” or 5cm to the FRONT of the vest.
Note this vest is NOT designed to cover the tailbone.
Putting on Your Vest:
- Each time you put on your Competitor vest,
make sure all the Velcro® straps at the sides are
loose to prevent undue stress on the zipper. - Make sure the zipper is seated well and do it up.
- Adjust the straps to ensure a snug fit.

Comfortable and full coverage
Good product and reasonable price. Comfortable and light. Full coverage of body. I’m In a southern state and vest is not hot like some I have used. Easy to adjust to fit snug but allows free movement.

Faulty zipper
I have two old Tipperary safety vests that had worn thin. They lasted so long that I was confident about buying a replacement but to my disappointment after a handful of rides the zipper has consistently become undone from the bottom leaving the vest fastened only my neck.

I love my Tipperary Eventer Pro!
This was my first safety vest purchase and I spent about 2 or 3 months researching all the available options. I was looking for a non-air vest that didn't break down in the brutal Florida heat.
Speaking of heat, yes it does make summer riding a little warmer but the side lace helps with air flow. I just wear a thin shirt with it. It definitely does not make it so warm that I won't use it.
I have 5 and 6 year old geldings that are pretty level headed but being introduced to trails and I am in my 50's now and don't bounce like I used to. It gives me a bit more peace of mind having this vest.
Some reviews stated the zipper malfunctioned and that is why I waited to review. The lace sides allow for it to be kept looser while zipping then the side lace can be easily snugged up vs zipping with the vest already tightened on the sides. It is still plenty rigid but quickly formed to my shape and have had zero issues. It still looks like new after heavy use for over 6 months.
I highly recommend this vest.

I love my new Vest
I bought my vest a few months ago and I love it! I bought the tall and it is tall enough, that is the hardest part about buying vets as an average weight tall person. It is light weight, it breaths, and I feel like it moves with me instead of against me. I also love that it meets all of the new safety standard world wide.

Long enough in torso
I bought a small tall for my 5’11 145 lb frame and it seems to fit well and covers my tail bone. Don’t notice it when riding so comfortable. Concerned about reviews on zip failures but instructions for use say to have side strings loose while zippering or unzipping so hopefully this will save the zip. Seems high quality. Not had it long enough to rate 5 star.

Wished it would have worked for me
I was really hoping this would work for me. I am having a difficult time finding a protective vest that will fit.According to most measurement charts for the various brands, I am a small in the waist but a large in the chest. It seems as though most protective vests are made to fit men. I have already tried an Aerowear (couldn't breathe in it) and a Tipperary eventing vest, which really ran large and felt like no protection at all. This vest was substantial, comfortable, and fit great, except for the spine length. I knew when I ordered it that it might not work. It was so long in back I could sit on it. I really wish they made it in a short. If the length will work fine for you I think you will be very pleased with this vest.Unfortunately I had to return it. The quest continues.

NOT HAPPY! IN FACT, PRETTY SAD.
After taking a nasty fall in December, 2017, fracturing two vertebra, I made a commitment to myself to always wear a protection vest for future rides. I purchased this one in purple as it had the highest safety rating (also the most expensive). Over the course of a few weeks, the zipper came undone three times so I sent it back, ordering a replacement. I've had the replacement for a few weeks and today, the zipper came undone on the new vest! (It opens from the bottom up while riding). Further, I learned that my friend, who ordered this same vest in black, had her zipper come apart the other day as well! To top it off, I was reading the Q & A for this vest and noticed some comments about broken zippers (so this is apparently an ongoing problem they have not resolved). The response states, "Thanks for your question! Many boot and shoe repair places or seamstresses can easily replace any kind of zipper, however there is no guarantee for the zipper on this vest." WHAT???? No guarantee for the zipper???? For a PROTECTION vest?
I have spoken to the Smartpak people several times about the issue with both vests and they have been very helpful stating they are reporting this problem with Tipperary and they suggested I try another brand which I will do sadly, as I've gotten used to the feel of this vest and feel otherwise protected by it.

Comfort is only "Pro"
This vest is about $100 more than the USG "Flexi" series and not as highly rated. But, it's not as bulky and it's more comfortable. When ASTM tests their vests, they test up to 24.5 joules of kinetic energy, whereas BETA 3 testing uses 35-45 joules. So, the BETA Level 3 testing is higher. I went with the USG Flexi vest, which also happens to come in brown which looks quite chic with my brown field boots and brown helmet ;-)

Very comfortable
It's flexible and moves with you. I tried on a couple of others but they were like stiff boards. I bought this after a bad accident where I broke four ribs and collapsed a lung. I don't want to ever do that again! I ride primarily trail and some dressage. Both English and Western. I am 5'4", 115 lbs., 34" bust. I ordered the XS and it was way too long (hit the saddle and caused the vest to lift up into my armpits) so sent it back and ordered a Youth Large from another vendor. SmartPak doesn't carry the Youth sizes.It can be warm on a hot day but that's to be expected from any vest. Very easy to adjust. Makes me feel a lot safer. Wish I'd bought this long before I needed it.

Pretty comfortable for such a heavy duty vest!
I had my spine fused as a 12-year-old kid (scoliosis surgery) and I purchased this vest after my surgeon recommended I wear some sort of torso protection if I were to get back into horseback riding as an adult (I'm now 28). I started taking lessons again after 16 years out of the saddle and I purchased this vest because of the high quality of construction and the spectacular safety rating.
I've worn this vest now for a few rides and I really like it. I'm surprised by how comfortable it is! For a SUPER STURDY vest it is quite flexible and light, and I don't feel like it encumbers my movements. Maybe if you have never worn a vest (or really hate wearing a vest) it might feel awkward for you, but this vest softens a bit and molds to your body as you warm up and ride.
The only downside I see to this vest is that it is hot if you are riding in summer weather, but hey, I rather be hot and safe(r) than the alternative!

Love this vest!
I bought this vest about a year ago as I was going to start eventing, and it was a great choice! It offers much more protection than the other Tipperary vests, and is fairly lightweight. In really hot weather, it does become a little warm, but that's not a big complaint as I only have it on for about half an hour. Overall, great purchase!

Update for me
I bought this vest after trying 3 other styles. Thirty years ago I evented in a Tipperary, and still have it-in the colors of the farm I rode for.
Felt that I needed to wear one at times now, as my Thoroughbred can be bratty at times and my new riding./driving Haflinger I want to ride out and about. One never knows.
I am still hassling the fit. I bought XS, and the side laces meet with a polo shirt on, and with winter sweaters, etc, how much gap there should be. Have not been on a horse or in a carriage with it yet, but definitely the best fit/most comfortable of all the
other styles I tried. I am 5'5"/105 lbs./ 34" bust

Great vest mixing style and function well!
Bought this vest after having the Tipperary Eventer vest and thought it would be good to upgrade to a "certified" vest. I agree the shoulders can sometimes feel restricted but its pretty rare that I even notice. Its certainly more bulky than the original Eventer but after it molds to your body shape you really forget you are wearing it. Its a little warm at times, but I never feel like I'm going to overheat...worst case is a sweaty shirt underneath but with a moisture wicking shirt it doesn't last long. I do feel the original Eventer had more cushioning (give) to it, but the Eventer Pro would spread an impact across the body better. The pull strings on the sides are a vast improvement to the original Eventer especially for folks that don't always have someone around to help out. That all said, I'm really happy with the Eventer Pro and think it will add a great layer of protection in case of unplanned dismounts!

Comfortable and stylish
Due to health issues, I was told I couldn't ride anymore. That was not an option for me and I decided to add a protective vest to protect my torso in addition to wearing a helmet, (I've been wearing a helmet since I started riding 35 yrs. ago). My doctor agreed with this strategy and I talked with several sales reps who helped me decide on the eventer pro as the most practical protection for me. The fit is good although, it is a bit heavy. I think it might be a bit warm in the summer. I like the fact that it is ANSI rated and has no gaps between the foam pieces. It could use a loop to hang it, I've been keeping it on a hanger in tack room of my trailer. I know it is cut high in the front to allow more mobility for jumping but, I would feel more protected if it came down just a bit farther in front. The XL doesn't come in tall sizes which would have given me a little more coverage. All in all, I am happy with this vest and my husband is much more comfortable with me continuing my equestrian pursuits.

Feeling safer
I ordered this vest after a lot of research. A year ago I had two train wrecks on a facility's lesson horse that physically, and then mentally, kept me from riding and kept my own horse unridden with only ground work. Now that I'm ready to get back to riding, I knew I needed something to protect my body and give me a better sense of safety. I followed the sizing chart on the website and the vest fits perfectly. It is lightweight and very comfortable. I love that I can adjust the size with the side laces. The ordering process was very simple and it was delivered as scheduled.

Has one issue
I bought this because I had a show coming up. This past weekend was the show. I had worn the best twice before and ridden in it, but I went to put on the vest and zip it up on Saturday before schooling cross country and the zipper broke up the middle. I was able to unzip it and fix it and I thought it was fine. At the show on Sunday though, it broke again. I was, again, able to fix it, but I don't like that it could do that on a cross country course. I love the vest and it's very comfortable, strong , and protective, but the zipper needs work. I know some other people how this happened to as well. One friends broke just the other day as well.

Love this vest!
This vest is very comfortable to wear. The strings on the sides make it easy to adjust for a snug fit, and easy to loosen for easy removal after riding. The ANSI certification gives me confidence that the vest will protect me in a fall. I had one string come loose from the plastic ball holder and have not been able to re-thread it, but I can tie the strings together and still get by easily.

Great Vest!! (Part 2)
This is an update to my previous review of this vest. I ended up ordering another vest, as it seemed new stock had come in...and I am so glad I did. The new vest is absolutely perfect - I love it! Fit is perfect and it is so comfortable and lightweight. The vest is more expensive than other rated vests, but it is so worth it to have a vest that is this comfortable! I do not even notice I am wearing it. Just love it and I am so happy.
