SmartPak Slow Eater Hay Bag is rated 3.2821 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST hay bag I bought this to replace a tough-1 hay bag I got half a year ago. The old hay bag had some sort of a plastic or vinyl coating on the inside that started peeling quickly and I didn't want it in my horse's hay. This hay bag has a no internal coating, it is just canvas, but this canvas is the most durable I have ever seen. It is really sturdy and durable. The net is really strong and wont break from your horse tearing at it. The size is humongous! It is twice as large as any other hay bag I have seen. It holds about 4-6 flakes of hay, depending on how dense the bale is. It has a strap in stead of a clip which I didn't know if I would like, but it works fantastic! Now I can hang it around a fence post, the stall door, trailer window. Before with a clip I could only put it where I had a hanger for it. It is so easy to load too. This is the best hay bag you will ever buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality hay bag, not good 'till the last drop This is a good quality hay bag. Easy to fill, durable hardware, and does the trick well. One note is that the string area is high enough up on the bag that inevitably there is some hay left at the bottom that the horses can't get to. Hence the 4/5 stars. If the bottom was also string-- that would make this the ultimate hay bag (and help dust filter through better! But as is, this is a good quality product (especially for the price) and one I'd buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small change, big improvement I bought this for my daughter's new trailer. She has to haul over an hour to and fro lessons and this looks to be a sturdy hay bag. The addition of the slow feed 'grid' over the opening prohibits the possibility that the hay will be yanked out of the bag and onto the floor in 10 minutes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good This is the first thing I have received from SmartPak that was not good. One bag lasted one feeding. The other bag lasted a couple. We used the net slow feeders and they have lasted a long time, but not these.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from it works if you want your horse to nibble slower, this is the hay bag for you. the only part I am not excited about is the single hook. the horses pull and work to get the hay out and the bag doesn't stay put. had to anchor it down in order for the bag not to flip. but other than the single hook, this bag worked to make my horse keep hay for longer than 15 minutes and not pull all his hay out on the ground.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok I bought this hay bag and the hay net. My horses liked the net much better. They seemed more frustrated with the bag. I liked the ease of filling it instead of the net but I think I will get another net.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good hay bag, only issue is horse can't get to the bottom 2-3 inches so always quite a bit of hay on the bottom she can't eat

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I bought this to use at shows. The nylon mesh started to separate the first time it was used. My mare also figured out that she could reach up into the top of the bag and pull out large amounts of hay, thus defeating the purpose. I will not use it again because I do not want my mare ingesting the strands of nylon. I will pay more for one that is better constructed and closes at the top.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good idea easy to use but netting falls apart while this seemed like good idea and value priced, the product is not effective because the horses teeth can easily rip the netting apart. Either the stitching needs to be stronger or the netting or both. Once they rip a larger hole it is no longer a SLOW hay feeder but just a hay feeder. I would rather pay more for the product and have it last for a long time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great in theory... I bought this specifically for stalling our pony overnight at a local fair. Every time I came to feed (2x/day) she still had hay in it so it does work! She the type of pony that if she sees food she eats it but this slowed her down so that not only did it keep her occupied she grew tired of eating (gasp!) AND for never really being stalled she was content - even away from home! However the first night she had it she did rip some of the netting out - I will be contacting SmartPak to see if they'll send a replacement (they're amazing so I'm hoping they will!) Hopefully #2 will hold up better!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I starting using my new hay bag about 3 weeks ago and so far it is holding up great. I use it every night for my mare who gets a little impatient about being inside. This has helped to keep her occupied a little longer without feeding her more ( she's a very easy keeper). My only complaint is that there is no way to close the top. I have watched her eat from the top holes before she goes for the front so I have it hung fairly hi. Over all it's a great bag at a great price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't last 24 hours I got these to keep my horses eating longer and both put holes in the netting the first night. I'm still using them but the are falling apart.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from SmartPak has great service Almost as soon as I got this my mare pulled part of the netting out.  SmartPak immediately sent me a new one which has lasted several months but now not only has she pulled the netting out, she has figured out how to just eat out of the top of it.  When I called SmartPak they were great and are sending me a different bag as a replacement.  The customer service is exceptional and although I would not recommend this bag I do recommend SmarkPak.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great hay bag for the price Great hay bag for horses that aren't rough on bags. Haven't used mine yet because I bought it for horse shows. My horse treats bags with respect so I hope this bag will last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best hay bag ever! Such great quality at a very affordable price. Love the net over the hole so they can't pull the whole flake of hay out at once and make a huge mess. Will be ordering more of these for shows this season!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bad design While this bag seems to be made very well, the design must not have been thought out very well. If you only put maybe a small amount of hay in it then it may work better for you. But I put a good bit of hay out for my horses to munch on all day. When you fill up these bags close to full the entire top of the bag is wide open. I hung the bag high in hope my horses wouldn't notice that the top was gaping open, but my mare went right for it and gobbled down as much hay as she could before I took it down. I also have the small hole hay net and that is what I use now. I'm going to try to add velcro or something to close up the top which might help. Smart Pak should consider a redesign on this product to have the top cinch all the way closed. It would be perfect if they could just fix that issue!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works wonderful I purchased this for a mini donk who is over weight, it has really helped to slow him down and yet also keeps him busy. I love it..

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Slow feed bag...slows feeding I bought this bag to feed chopped hay to my older horse (33 years young!) I was thinking the smaller holes would allow the hay to be transported better because it is so short. However, it was very difficult for him to eat out of the bag and eating is a chore for him so he just gave up. I ended up feeding him on the ground in a tub. I think for a young aggressive eating horse this may be the bag of choice. The quality of the bag is great and I plan to use it for my younger horses when we travel.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not for a greedy eater!! My girl lives to eat and made quick work of the webbing on this hay bag.She was not happy with the size of the holes so she just ripped new ones in no time at all....I thought it was a great idea but she did not agree!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Surprisingly Disappointing Until using this product, I liked hay bags better than hay nets. I tried the small hole hay net at the same time as this bag, & what a difference! This bag was so frustrating to 1 of my horses (who is usually pretty patient) that he kept pawing the ground while trying to eat (he's never done that before in the years I've had him). He even tore at the nylon mesh with his teeth, fraying it. By the end of the day, the back of the bag tore where the metal ring (that the strap for hanging the bag clips to) connected to it. The small whole hay net is what I recommend instead.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good hay bag not so slow though I bought this hay bag for a very easy keeper. It seems very durable -- I use it daily and shows no signs of wear yet (a problem with lots of other hay bags I have tried). However, he can defeat the slow eating part by sticking his nose in the top and getting the hay that way. I have hung it as high as possible without having him reach up to get to the "eating" hole, and he still manages to get some of the hay from the "filling" hole at the top. A flap or velcro closure would help.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wish I could recommend I really wish I could recommend this product. I loved the idea of it. Way cheaper than the "nibble nets" and a lot easier to fill and handle than the small hole nets. I bought 4, hung two the first day, and came back that evening with 1 ripped (and not on a seam) I thought maybe it was just a defunk one, but sadly that was the story with every bag I ordered, plus the 2 replacement bags smartpak sent me for free. After 5 ripped bags (one is in with the show supplies in package yet), I figured this wasn't just 1 or two bad bags. Smartpak was great and replaced my order a second time, only with the small hole nets instead and they have stood up for over a month now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hungry mare = 1, hay bag = 0 I was really excited to use this hay bag. Normally I use a small feeder hay net. My horse is a very vigorous eater, shaking the net all over and sending up a cloud of hay and dust. As we were at a show, I was trying to avoid getting a lot of hay particles in her braids. Enter SmartPak slow eater hay bag! Easy to load? Oh, yes. Much easier than the net. Easy to hang? Very easy. I emerged much less covered in chaff than I usually am after hanging the net. I used a double-snap to anchor the bag against the stall, since the bag has a d-ring for that purpose. That was where I went wrong. The next day, the back of the bag was shredded. Very sad. I think I may be able to have it repaired, but I'll just go back to the net for now.I would still recommend this bag - it's a decent product for the money. If your horse is a rough eater, destoyer of tack/equipment, maybe pass this one by, or don't attach the d-ring to the wall!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected I bought this for trailering my mare and foal - didn't want to use a traditional hay net that the foal could get a foot in. This hay bag was bigger than I expected (a good thing) and the quality was better than I expected, especially for the price. The holes for the hay are a little small but my mare figured out how to dip into the top. All in all, a good value for a well-constructed hay bag.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I bought this hay bag for everyday use. On day two the ring on the back that keeps if from swinging around backwards tore right out. It was very inexpensive, now I know why. It is is large enough to fit nearly half a bale in it, so that's good but it is made of very lightweight material so I'd only recommend it for use in a trailer for a horse that isn't too aggressive an eater.
