Clips to reins don't stay closed
I've used it twice, clips that attach to rein metal loops don't stay closed.
Also recommend a DESIGN CHANGE, if the "draw reins" that attach to the center chest piece had clips to remove the draw rein part would be handy for leading etc.
All made of Cheap leather/pleather, should have just bought the $30 set.

Needs sized better
We bought this at the farm I work at for horses who struggle with wanting to go too high/above the bit since we couldn't find the old German martingale. Overall, it's a decent martingale. The leather is easy to work with/break in, and I love the web reins, as they are soft and easy to maneuver. Measurements and sizing have something to be desired, however. The loop at the girth is borderline too small (just fits around the fleece girth I use on the setting I need it), the draw straps need to either be shorter, or there needs to be more D rings, and the neck strap could go a bit longer. The horse we purchased for initially (Corey) is a 17.2hh Oldenburg who believes he's part giraffe. A German martingale was the perfect aid as it simply puts pressure on when they raise their head too high, and releases the moment they soften (leaving less room for rider error as well!), and it has helped him more quickly and easily find his balance. It's definitely helped us get more accomplished during each ride, and has helped him to relax more quickly.
As to size issues, I have to set it on the shortest D ring for it to come on when it should, while the neck and martingale strap just fits on almost the loosest setting. It's disappointing as he's a large horse and I was hoping to use this on some of our smaller horses as well, but it won't do much good as-is. My ONLY complaint: please make this in cob size, and also make this one fit better. The ratio seems to be off. It runs both too large and too small at the same time!

Nice Quality
Super nice, the only draw back is there is no clip for your girth attachment. It did not fit the width and I had to get my own clip device.

good quality & does the job for a great price
I was looking for a german martingale to help as a little reminder for my green, high headed mare and took a chance on the SmartPak one because of its price point. I've owned it for a little over a month, the leather quality is great especially for the price, I personally love the web reins when dealing with a green horse and it does the job. Fits my 16.1/16.2 thoroughbred mare perfectly.

Effective but...
How has no one mentioned that the web reins will SHRED your hands to bits?! This would be to die for it they were leather with leather stops OR rubber. They are a nightmare and I resent the one horse who needs it right now for hurting my princess fingers.
On the upside, I love SmartPak and it does do its job.

Love this martingale!
Thank you smartpak! I looked EVERYWHERE for a German martingale for my 17.3hh warmblood gelding who loves to drag me to the jumps, and I couldn't find a thing that fit until this one. The leather is also very soft, and I prefer the woven web reins over the rubber ones I tried in another product. I couldn't be happier!

Gets the job done
The reins are nice, but martingale straps are too long to be effective on my 16.3 TB type horse. I had to tie knots in them for them to have any kind of contact. Additionally, the leather is rubbing off on the reins near the bit. That is just a cosmetic issue but it's worth mentioning.

Nicely Made But Too Small
The martingale was nicely made and the quality of the material was good; however, it was too small for a 16.3 hh TB. Would buy it again if they made a bigger size.

Small for my horse
I bought this approx. three weeks ago. The quality is fabulous, but it is a little small for my 16.2hh horse. The fit is close enough that I am still trying to find a workaround as it is otherwise exactly what I wanted.

Smaller than previously
I feel here like I now feel in grocery store - I am paying same price for 12 oz as I used to pay for 16 oz. I bought this same German Martingale a couple of years ago and was replacing it due to my horse stepping on and breaking leather strap (which I had had replaced by Amish for better quality hardware as this hardware is average at best) This one is about same quality - but smaller. Reins most especially smaller - about 16 inches total - 8 inches per rein. This is the second product in a month I ordered and had to send back because it is now smaller (other was a leather halter) - costing $18.00 in return fees. Extremely disappointed.

Holds up well, matches my tack!
I've had this martingale set for almost 3 years now and it still looks brand new. Great quality, easy to adjust and matches well with chocolate colored tack!

Really helps!
This really helps my mare who can get a little anxious and stick her head up in the air. Better than a running martingale and draw reins. Nice leather too.

Please Read Before You Buy
I was looking for a German Martingale, I saw the reviews saying some pieces did'nt for correctly. I still bought it & ALL THE PIECES FIT. I am in love with this product. The leather is soft. I am buying another one!

Doesn't fit anywhere.
I chose this martingale over others because Smartpak has great customer service. I read the reviews and figured that it had a 50/50 chance on fitting one of my four horses. It didn't. It's too small in the girth attachment, too small in the neck strap, and too large in the rein attachment. The only reason I'm keeping it is because I have a friend who can do leather repair to shorten the reins and lengthen the girth strap.

Hopefully just what I need
I've just started training with a German martingale, but after borrowing a friend's once, I just decided to jump in & buy my own. The leather is very nice & it is well-made & looks very durable. The reins are a good length and easy to hold. I like this product.
My only complaint is that the actual working part of the martingale (the long ends that go thru the bit to clip onto the reins) are on the shortest setting and I have nowhere shorter to adjust them if I need more effectiveness. I could tie knots in them, or take them to a leather worker, but I wish they were a couple inches shorter instead. (for the record, my horse is 16.2hh)

Not for my horse
Seemed to make my hot horse even more nervous so I returned after one ride. Easy to use however. Truly the "fool-proof" version of a draw rein.

Martengalerings are in wrong position to really be effective. The leather quality was very good. I returned due to the ring placement being in bad locations. Thanks

Great quality
I really like the quality of the leather, and the fact that the reins have rein stops, unlike so many of the other brands. My only complaint is that the martingale is a bit too long. I had to tie knots in the leather to make it the correct length for my horses neck

Great schooling martingale at a great price
Such a great schooling martingale for a great price. Its perfect for the occasional schooling tool for my young horse to encourage him to round and stay soft. I can't speak a ton for durability since I don't use it a ton, but it seems like it would last a long time.
The pros:
Nice quality leather, great stitching. Soft right out of the box. Looks like it is very durable.
The cons:
The fit: My horse has a shorter neck and compact build but solid shoulders. It fits my 16hh Oldenburg/TB cross on the 4th (shortest) ring. A horse any smaller might have problems. It doesn't fit "just right", but it does fit. I guess if you are making an item in once size only it is tough for it to fit "just right" for such a variety of horses.
Also the leather is a little bit heavier than my preference. I guess that will make it more durable in the long run but I can't help but wish it was a little bit thinner/lighter. But that is being pretty picky!
Overall and excellent buy! And again smartpak has the best customer service so you really can't go wrong with this.

Nice leather and well made
Big difference in how my horse carries himself. Was worried that this was too large for my Polish Arab, but it does the job nicely. There are four rings on the reins instead of the usual three. I am using the last ring so am thankful for that. If not for the fourth ring, I could not have used this as it would not have served it's purpose. The stitching is tight and strong, nicely put together. I would have liked to see a swivel clip on the martingale part - (the ends that pass through the bit and clip onto the O rings on the reins). The way it is made is such that I am constantly "fixing" the piece from the martingale to sit evenly through the O ring on the ends of the bit. I use a german martingale for my western tack and although much cheaper than this one, they used the swivel clips on the reins. Makes for no fussing on keeping the pieces sitting evenly on the bit.

Very nice, built for larger horses
I bought this at the recommendation of my vet, to help with getting my mare to stretch down a bit more and not drop her back. It is very nice quality and I like the sturdy web reins very much. I do wish it was made in a Cob size, though... with a compact 15 hand horse, the forks are way too long and I have to tie a knot in them and use the tightest setting. I am getting them shortened by 6 to 8 inches!

One of the best Pieces of Tack Ever
I have a few pieces of tack that I love and cannot do with out. This is one of them. It is a great cross between draw reins and a running martingale. It has the leverage of the draw rein without the akwardness of the double rein. It disengages when the horse puts his head down and yields. I can adjust it from on the horse, if I want it to have more or less effect. I can't speak to the durability as I have only had it a month. I have several friends who are going to get them on my recommendation. I am currently using it for dressage and my weekly jumping lesson.

I've only owned this two weeks so cannot comment on durability but from the looks of the quality I don't think that will be a problem. Unfortunately no one seems to make german martingales for small horses so we had to tie knots in the forks for it to fit. Web reins are not my favorite either but I don't recall seeing anything different on the market. At least this set included the martingale and the reins.

Nice!
I had previously purchased a German Martingale from another vendor and returned it because the reins were way too long and slippery - then I decided to purchase this. I was unsure about the webbed reins and that's why I didn't purchase this first. So glad I returned the other and purchased this set. Leather quality is nice and webbed reins give me the secure grip I was looking for. I have a 17 hand Warmblood and the martingale fit him fine (on the last hole!) what are u waiting for? Returns are free!

Great Product but fits weird
I have to agree with the other reviewers, this is a really nice product but it doesn't fit my horse. The neck strap is too short and the martingale reins are way too long for my horse. He's a 16H Morgan cross so he's a bit more upheaded and the long reins will never come into play when I ride, even on the shortest adjustment. I really wanted this to work as its a quality product but unfortunately I will be returning it.

Just Right
I have a Hanoverian who is only about 16.1 hands but I couldn't find a German martingale to fit him. (What do people with really big Warmbloods do?) Well, this martingale fits just right, it's high quality leather and well made. Thanks, SmartPak!
