    Shapley's Original M-T-G is rated 4.648 out of 5 by 125.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Miracle worker This stuff is awesome. I first heard about it a few years ago when my mare got bad rain rot under her blanket in the winter when it was far too cold to bath her with medicated shampoos. I used this and within days we saw an improvement in her coat. Since then I use it for rain rot and for her dry skin problems on her tail. I have owned my mare for 7 years and she has always had issues with an itchy tail and often scratched it all off in the summer. We tried everything to cure it without having to call a vet, but we were applying stuff every day and it still wasn't working very well. I tried this on her tail one summer and low and behold the itching stopped and her tail began growing back faster and healthier! One of the best things about it is that since it's oily I only have to apply it every 4-5 days! It does smell a bit weird, but I think it smells like a campfire so I don't mind it at all, especially considering how much it helps my horse! Awesome stuff and I highly recommend it to everyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from only this got the hair to grow back I have had this product for the last five years or so. I originally bought it to get my horse's tail to grow back after he rubbed a bald spot. I thought it was adequate but not great and stopped using it.Then, my horse started losing hair on an area of his face that had ulcerated. I tried about three or four products on his face to no avail.....I simply could not get the hair to grow back and thought I'd be stuck with an unsightly large bald area on my horse's handsome face. I was telling someone about the problem I was having and they suggested MTG, a product I still had, but had quit using as I wasn't convinced it had helped with the tail.Well, immediately the hair grew back, it was simply amazing. I now use it for any hair growth dilemma, except the tail! As I write this, I'm wondering it I should give the tail another go, because, as it turned out, my horse had needed his sheath cleaned, and had four beans! The smell is not great, and you have to wash it off, but when nothing else works but this, the smell ceases to be a concern.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this stuff! This is the ONLY product that I have ever tried that gets rid of fungus quickly - often overnight! I also use it on my horse's tail when he rubs it. It keeps his tail strong and full. I highly reccommend this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from MTG I have used this product for years on my TBs scraggly tails and other hair issues. It does do a great job on nicks and scratches but I'm still waiting for a lush, full tail on either of my horses! It is perhaps their genetics but their tails still leave a lot to be desired.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent enough... But too early to tell.I am using it to encourage my horse's mane and tails to grow a bit. So far it is too early to tell if it's really working.I can say that the product smells pretty strongly (like bacon) and it's very greasy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a Miracle!!! My Percheron rescue is plagued with mud scratches. No matter the weather, wet or dry, hot or cold, she has them. I have tried everything, with little or no result. Until now. The next day after the first application of MTG, I saw scabs separating from her skin. Many came off with a careful brushing. After applying the second day, all of the scabs were loose, and could be brushed away. The irritated areas were looking normal. After a week of daily application, she was clear of scabs and irritation. Now I apply just once a week to keep them at bay. I am so happy to find a product that works. Yes, it is stinky, and it isn't cheap, but this stuff is worth every penny!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does What It Says! I show Arabians at the National level, and we do not allow any sort of fake hair on our Arabians at shows (tails or mane), but judges like to see an Arabian with a tail flagged and with a good 6 inches - a foot of extra length dragging behind it. Without Shapley's MTG, this would not be possible for many of our horses. With proper use of Guardtex tail tape and MTG, we are able to get our horse's to have luxuriously long and THICK tails. The MTG also seems to help keep the hair slick, so much less is lost in the braiding process done on hunters and showhack horses. I HIGHLY recommend this product, I could not live without it!P.S Everyone complains about the smell, but honestly it isn't that bad at all. It smells like smoked bacon, and while not a traditional smell in the barn - it's really not that bad! Plus it goes away after a few days unless you get really close to the horse's tail.P.S Again. If you want to really increase growth, use MTG and also braid the tail up with Guardtex tail tape. While tail bags work well, Guardtex is much more affective and more comfortable for the horse.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Works My dog had a spot much like a hotspot up on his back. I would just get him to be leaving it alone and BAM he had chewed on it again. I saw that Shapley's MTG could be used on pets so decided to try it. It seems to be working great! He hasn't bothered it now for almost a week. I think I might see some hair growth now too. It does have a smokey/sulphur smell but I kind of like it. Small price to pay for a product that works. I will be trying it on one of my mares as soon as it quits raining/snowing out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly it works I bought this stuff for my gelding because his mane was thin & chewed off when he arrived ):I had boarded him for 3.5 months until our barn was finished & his mane grew 3.5 inches during that time! I read that average is .5 inches a month for horses. I applied MTG 1x/week because I read horror stories and my gelding has a beautiful, thick tail I didn't want to ruin, so I did that and after the dead-looking hair grew out I banged his tail and cut off about 1.5 inches of mane and it looks so healthy & I still apply it 1x/week & it's getting thicker!!! The downside is it's greasy for horses who roll every morning/day (I don't mind in winter), &, although it's not really a con, it smells like BBQ LOL! To me that smells pleasant but, I can understand how some people won't like that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tried and True Grows hair and conditions tails and manes. Really does do everything it says it will. Even though the smell isn't exactly lovely, it works and a little goes a long way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive but Smelly I bought this to aide my horse's tail progress as I might have accidentally cut off a third of his tail oops! I have seen a tremendous amount of growth from my other horse and a reasonable amount from the one who really needed it. BUT he came down with a fungus on his back legs (from the hocks down and the rear forearms) and it cleared up IN A DAY! I don't care if it smells like barbecued bacon fat I will keep using it! It has lasted me over a year. And believe me I have tried every anti-bacterial fungal treatment out there before I realized the secret was in my tack room all along!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Multi-Purpose Product I always have MTG in my brush tote. I use it for anything skin related for my horses (think Windex from My Big Fat Greek Wedding). It takes care of tail rubbing, fungus, scratches, rain rot, girth sores .... and does a better job than any product I've ever tried on all of those problems. And it greatly speeds up the regrowth of hair. I really can't say enough about this stuff, it's great!(I will say, it does smell pretty terrible, but to me it's totally worth having a healthy horse! And it comes off easily with soap and water.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Stuff This stuff works. I put it on all of my horse skin scrapes and the hair grows back right away. If my horse's tail is not quite thick enough are her dock, I just put on some MTG and hair grows there right away. It is great for treating fungus and rain rot. My only complaint is that you have to wear gloves and it kind of smells like moldy bacon (ewww!) Overall great product, would suggest it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works !!! I've been using it for many years on a number of horses for skin, mane and tail problems. I was most grateful that it recently worked on a rescue that had severe scratches and we couldnt even touch his back legs, so this worked wonders because it stays where you put it , soon his scabs fell off the swelling went down and hair growth was visible in a couple of days after that ! I advise to put it in a spray bottle for easier use.... ;)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Caused Hives! I tried to use this on my gelding's tail to add some fullness, but it made him break out in hives on his hindquarters. My trainer used it on her horse's mane and his neck broke out in hives too. I will never use it again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for rain rot My aged gelding developed severe rain rot this year for the first time. I tried several medicated shampoos and treatments, with no apparent improvement. I had never heard of MTG before but tried it after getting several recommendations, the condition improved visibly after the first few days, and was essentially cleared up in 2 weeks. The only drawback is that it made my horse look/feel really greasy and smell like a smoked ham (but I probably applied it much too liberally the first time).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from multiple uses for this product this product is useful fo both the treatment of skin problems as well as prevention of disorders such as scratches. I apply it to my horse's legs several time a week in wet or damp weather. It also cleared up a dry scaling patch where hair had not grown for years. Prescription medications had not had any effect -with routine several time a week application, the dry scaling area resolves and hair quickly grows in

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Use With Caution This stuff works wonders on my QH mare's rain rot! Too bad I can't use it on her... Every time I put it on her legs to treat the rain rot there, they swell and get hot. By the second day they are super puffy and on day three she is always lame for two/three days. This has only ever happened when I've applied MTG and it took me a while to put two and two together. But I really do think that's the problem. I'm thinking she has some sort of allergy to it? Has anyone else had a similar issue?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stuff Smells like bacon, but it definitely seems to do the trick on the spots where my horse gets rubs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Belongs in every tack closet A trainer friend recommended this for scratches, brought on by an unusually humid summer, and it worked like a charm. Pick up a box of disposable latex gloves at the pharmacy before using this--you don't want this smell on your hands! Amazing product, though. It's also supposed to be great for tail growth. Turn upside down to shake well before using.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it's weight in gold I was introduced to this product about a year ago, and only wish I had known about it sooner. It does everything that it says it does and more. I like the campfire wood smell that it has too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rapid Hair Growth! My boy has been suffering with a bad skin fungus this hot, Texas summer. It's finally under control with medicated shampoo, but he looked decidedly mangy with his patchy coat. One of the barn girls recommended this product to try and I've become a convert. The patches are filling in nicely and he doesn't seem to object to it being sprayed on his face (be careful not to get it in the eyes). It smells a bit like petrolated bacon grease, but this is a small price to pay for rapid hair growth!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long time user I've used this for years. My horse has a long flowing tail that is course. MTG keeps is healthy looking, softer and growing continually. His mane is pretty, yet it doesn't grow long and flowing, just average when I forget to put on the MTG. It grows much better with a once week MTG application. It also alleviates "tail itch" from occasional dry skin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome product Used it on my mare who had a terrible case of rain rot. It was cleared up almost completely in a matter of days. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works quickly Despite the HORRID smell of this product (smells like BBQ sauce gone VERY wrong) it is the fastest, best product I have ever used. I work with off-track Thoroughbreds and they are constantly getting some sort of fungus, dry skin, etc. and MTG gets rid of it in no time. I wash my horses legs with a medicated shampoo, apply the MTG and the next day her fungus is gone. Works GREAT on dew-poison and sun burnt skin.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well The smell is not pleasing but it works so well that I can overlook it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product In only three applications on my horse's mane I'm already seeing some growth. I also applied this in her tail because it was very dry and after one application her tail is no longer dry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for every horse owner!!! Every winter my QH gets bad rain rot and I have a lot of people fuss over him and worry until the see them a week after I put the MTG on! This past winter I was 100 miles away from my horse in college and only got to see him on weekends. I would put the MTG on him on saturday and come back the next weekend to find him totally rain rot free! I will never use anything else for my horses! I also use it on healed cuts where hair is trying to grow. It grows the hair back very quickly. It doesn't smell the greatest but it washes off well with dish soap!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems to be working... I'd never used this product before, and I'm still using it to treat the condition, but it seems to be working well so far. I'm using it on an older gelding with skin problems, and they seem to be clearing up. Too soon to tell if hair is growing back in. The smell isn't pleasant, but it's not hideous - sort of a sulfur/rubber/BBQ sauce combination (and the smell washes off your hands easily).
