Why We Love This

Herm Sprenger Bow Balance Stirrup ensures improved leg position. Changing the weight ratio on the Herm Sprenger Bow Balance Stirrups results in perfect balance and great comfort for the rider. Shock absorbing grip is achieved by a widened tread made of rubber with two types of properties.

The internationally renowned System 4 technology used in these stirrups enables immediate release of the foot in case of emergency. Bow Balance design provides easy "pick up" upon mounting as they require very little effort on the rider's part - a simple touch of the foot to the stirrups and it gently folds onto the rider's foot.

That's why we've created a stress-free return policy. If you purchase an item and it doesn't meet your expectations, we want to know about it, take care of you and give you your money back.

The Fine Print

We love our products and we're happy to take them back - even custom items. We'll happily take back everything from engraved halters to personalized jackets - even embroidered blankets that have been worn (minus the manure, please). But there are a few things we have to restrict returns on (silly federal regulations).

Health regulations require that undergarments (including bras) need to be in new condition (tags and packages intact) in order to be returned. (Even if it wasn't required, do you really want to shop from a store that takes back used undergarments?!)

As riders, we know what a big investment a saddle is. That's why we're proud to offer the best Test Ride program in the business. You can keep our Test Ride saddles risk-free for five days, to really make sure you like the fit and the feel. We know that to truly try a saddle, you have to really ride in it. So go ahead and girth it up. Forget about wrapping your stirrup leathers. Try it with or without a saddle pad. Basically, treat it like you already bought it, so you can make sure you really want to. Because when you buy a saddle from us, we want to make sure you love it. Of course, we want our other customers to love their new saddles, too.
That's why we have a Test Ride option for each saddle we carry - so that all of the other saddles can stay in pristine condition, waiting for their new owners. For this reason, if you purchase a saddle outside the Test Ride program, it's still eligible for return, but must be free from any marks or damage.

So that's it. Seriously. Those are all of our "rules." Well, except the most important one - treating our customers the way we want to be treated. So if you have any questions or if there is anything we can do, please call us at 1-800-461-8898 or email We are always happy to help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkable!!! I bought these over two years ago and I love them! I have massive damage to my knee (from a freak riding accident) and my knee NEVER hurts when I ride. I also have a week ankle, which would turn out when riding---not with these! I fix hunt and for three plus hours and gallop cross country and they are wonderful! Worth every penny!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable I am returning to riding after a 20 year long break and bought these metals for comfort. They are very comfortable and I have not lost a stirrup since I have been riding in them!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent shock absorption These are wonderful for sore joints. Usually my knees and ankles are on fire after a ride but they no longer are in these! They do have a bit of a learning curve though; I'm used to composite stirrups that were very light and these are like brick heavy so when I have a loose ankle I tend to lose them easier, and then catching them with my foot again is interesting because I'm used to having to find my stirrup and these are naturally in the correct position. If you want something a bit more familiar, get the ones that aren't offset. If you need help with your joints and positioning, get these but expect some getting used to with the shape and weight. Overall I love them, they just weren't what I was expecting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect! Recently purchased after researching stirrups for hours. Previous stirrups were uncomfortable and my knees had a slight discomfort after training and trail rides. I LOVE the HS stirrups...great support and cushion for feet, have not lost a stirrup in training class or riding yet, much easier to keep knees and body in proper alignment. Like I said, I love them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Design!!! Hands-Down! I had recently tried several other types of modern stirrups. All went back as they just did not seem any better than the straight traditional stirrup. I almost did not try these, but I am glad I did. I think the best complement of a design is when they just seem natural and you don't need to think about it. Well these are them! You will have to pry my cold dead hands off them to get me to stop using them. Not to heavy, but not too light, not to tall in construction. Best two features are 1) the offset is perfect and 2) the movement of the foot bet is not too floppy, but not overly stiff. Very nicely balanced. Best product I have tried in a long time. Believe me I am a picky customer. They are expensive put well worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are AMAZING! i bought these used, as the price is outrageous, but they are incredible! I immediately felt a difference in my joints and position. I was pretty skeptical about these being different than my knock off jointed stirrups, but was pleasantly surprised! I was less sore and just felt better. Worth their price for me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Therapeutic Just purchased a second pair of these amazingly comfortable stirrups for my new trail saddle. Bought the first pair 8 years ago for my dressage saddle. After suffering a traumatic calcaneus (heel) fracture which left me with limited range of motion along with pain, I was delighted to experience great relief both during and after the ride. I was recently reminded of how therapeutic these were after riding a friend's horse with all of her own gear which did not have bow balance stirrups. I dismounted with apparent lameness and she immediately inquired about it. I smiled upon realization and promptly purchase my next pair for my new trail saddle that would arrive any day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these irons! After struggling with a problematic left leg (PT says I have "weird bio-mechanics)-- tendonitis in the top of my foot, sore ankle, patellar tendonitis and IT band syndrome--I was ready to try something new after a sore summer of riding that culminated in blowing the left iron during a less-than-stellar attempt by my boy over a fence (he is learning to jump) and my subsequently landing in the dirt. My trainer sneakily called Santa Claus (aka Mom and Dad) and I have had much happier rides since Christmas. My left leg stays much quieter because my ankle isn't fatigued and I LOVE the wide grippy footbed on them. I honestly don't think I would have eaten dirt if I had been using these irons! A word of warning though--I agree with both my trainers that these are not good for beginners. You have to have a leg first as these are much lighter and have a lot more flexion in all directions than standard irons. You have to know where to put your leg first as these do not help you with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for knee pain but questioning the "bow"... I have been riding in those for 6-8 months now, and I can say with confidence that I will never ride in regular stirrups again! (actually I do on my trail ride saddle, and hate every minute of the ride and after the ride!). After a hard one hour lesson of flat/jumping, my knees do not hurt anymore! The hinges provide the flexibility to relieve pain, but are firm enough that your lower leg is not flapping around all over the place! My trainer never made a negative comment on my leg position after I started riding in them. Actually I think it helps me drive my ankles deeper and I feel more secure over the jumps... I gave it four stars because to me the bow shape doesnt not help picking up a loose iron, so I feel that I overpaid quite a bit for that feature...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better...but not great I've been riding for 9 years and have had knee pain since (essentially) the very beginning. After going on several long, painful rides at the beginning of this past season, I decided to try these and see if they helped. I didn't read the box because I was so excited to get them on and I accidentally put them the wrong sides. That being said, I rode in it and it was immediate relief. My knees felt so much more stable and several of my equitation problems (problems that caused a lot of pain) disappeared. After reading the box later I went and checked, and switched them to their correct sides. I found it much harder to get my feet in the stirrups and my good knee hurt more with them on the correct side. I spent several of the next days switching them back and forth and purposely forgetting if they were correct side or not and having them on the opposite side won hands down. The only reason I gave these $240 stirrups a 4 is that these stirrups are not a cure all. Is it easier for me to go on long rides with these stirrups? Yes. Do I still have knee pain? Absolutely. Was it worth the $240 for the improved equitation slightly more relief on long rides? Not too sure. I am glad I bought them, I just wish they worked a little better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely The Best!! These stirrups are super easy on your legs and knees and when you lose your stirrup, they are always very easy to get your foot back into them again! My feet don't slip at all in these.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful quality, but did not work for me. I bought these stirrups to solve a problem I have with numbness in the ball of my right foot when riding. I looked at them for a long time prior to purchasing and the reviews were good. As with all Sprenger products the quality and craftsmanship are wonderful. They are nicely made and I am sure are built to last. However, the one concern I had was that my previous jointed stirrups were too springy and I felt like I couldn't keep my leg still or heel down. That isn't a problem I typically have, it only happened with the jointed stirrups. Unfortunately, these stirrups caused the same issue for me. While it's easy to keep your irons it never quite feels like you have the right tension against the iron. The springy feeling gave me too much feedback and I feel like it compromised my base of support. I tried them a couple times and returned them as I simply do not like the feeling of a springy stirrup. For those who do I am sure these are the best on the market.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great BUT This was a birthday gift for my daughter that she requested. She loved them, but her riding instructor says she developed a bad habit and would like to exchange them for the MDC Comfort Stirrup #13785. Is this possible? I no longer have the paper work that came with the order.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these I have had these stirrups for about 2 weeks. I got them because my knees hurt after a long trail ride, and sometimes the balls of my feet were tingling. I have used them about 6 times now. I like the wide foot bed with rubber. My previous stirrups had a metal grate. So far, no knee pain!
    Date published: 2014-08-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfortable on the joints! These are really nice stirrups. They have a wide base, with a grippy material that makes it a lot easier to keep your foot in the stirrup. They are designed to hang from the leathers so that they pivot outward so as to be able to get your stirrup back more easily if you lose it. However, I find that they really don't achieve that position as much as I had hoped. I also own the MDC stirrups with the top piece that you can click to various angles, and that really does make it easy to get your stirrup back if you lose it,, but they are not as comfortable as these are. I bought these because my hips, knees and ankles were starting to show the signs of wear and tear from riding, and I have to say that my ankles did not hurt at all when using these stirrups. I would give them 5 stars if they hung in a way that made them easier to get back quickly. Overall, if you have joint issues in your ankles and knees, you might really like these stirrups.
    Date published: 2014-08-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great quality, not for me I tried these stirrups because I've been plagued with knee pain (tendonitis) on and off for most of my riding career. A friend who also had experienced knee issues suggested I try these stirrups or a new saddle with some knee rolls (my saddle is a plain flap, no padding, knee rolls, blocks, nothing!). Figuring a set of stirrups is infinitely more cost effective than a new saddle I gave them a try. First off I want to say that these seem to be extremely high quality. They appear well-made, the movement in the joints was very smooth, and I can imagine with the proper care they will last a very long time. They definitely move with your foot, I tried these wrapped in vet-wrap in case I needed to return them (I did) and I never once lost my stirrup. That said, I felt like with so much movement I had no base of support. Like everyone, I know that you shouldn't depend on your stirrup, but the reality is you need some sort of resistance from it. I noticed it especially when landing a jump. I had too much give in these, I felt like I just kept going instead of having any sort of anchor. It also made my leg feel less secure, and a friend was watching me ride and said she noticed that I looked forced and uncomfortable. I switched to my old school plain Jane stirrups and it was like night and day, no contest my old ones were way better. I tried them three times, the first two times I had little to no pain, but as I said it comes and goes. The third ride some of the old achey feeling started creeping back in and I figured if they didn't keep all the pain at bay it wasn't worth sacrificing the rest of my comfort. I can see how these would work really well for some people, I'm just not one of them!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricy but worth it! Okay so let me first off say, I have had a problem for a long time with my leg. Until a few months ago, I had always ridden in a 'chair seat' and NO ONE ever corrected me! (So frustrating now.) I began to try to keep my leg in the proper position, but every time I would try to ride correctly, I would have a ton my pain in my ankles, calves, and knees. I'd have to take frequent breaks and it was becoming a burden, especially since I have a show next weekend (my first B-rated too). I couldn't keep my leg still, or use it at all at times to apply aids or pressure. I did my research and found these. After reading the reviews, cursing myself for even considering dropping that much money on stirrups, I still bought them. I received them last week and yesterday was my fourth time using them. At first, my ankles were not used to flexing that much (I tend to balance on the balls of my feet instead of shoving my heel down), so I had some pain. However I began to stretch them out every day a few times and now I don't have nearly as much pain and my knees and calves don't hurt at all. I'm glad I bought these! I'm sure with time my ankles will be better adjusted to the jointed feature!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stirrups! I bought these stirrups after breaking my ankle. They have been a lifesaver for me as I get back in the saddle! The hinge action coupled with the design of the irons relieves pressure and pain in my ankle. I'm also able to maintain my leg position. A two hour ride is no problem now. This product is worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for people with knee or ankle injuries I borrowed these from my trainer after I got back in the saddle following ACL replacement. My regular irons caused me a lot of knee pain and soreness so he had me try these out. Loved them! My knee pain was greatly reduced and I like that they are lighter than the traditional stirrups. I had to give them back and am now using the old school solid stirrups. No knee paid but boy were the Herm Sprenger luxury stirrups. :) If they weren't so pricy I would probably already own my own pair. Bottom line, knee and ankle aches and pains will be a thing of the past if you invest in these.
