Overview

Why We Love This

The patented Free-Up Feeder is great for stall hay feeding and swings open to fill in less than 30 seconds! The metal Free-Up Feeder Frame measures 12" x 24" and features safe, rounded corners, plus a threaded locking nut. Open the nut to weave your Cinch Net onto the frame. Once the net is on the frame, turn the nut to close for additional safety and overall structural strength.

Ideal for: Large stables and streamlining chores. Use in stalls, trailers, lean-tos, turn outs, panels, fences or on barn walls. Works indoors or outdoors!

The Original (1 3/4") HEAVY DUTY opening size is good for more aggressive eaters and a larger herd. Also good for horses that haven't used a slow feed net before. It's great for slowing down horses that eat fast, are generally healthy, but waste too much hay.

The SF/Slow Feed (1 1/4") opening size is good for horses that doen't get enough exercise or are metabolic. Very easy keepers who have used slow feed nets before do well on this net level. Also works well as a pacifier for stall-bound horses.

The Hay Chix® Cinch Net Mini size 1 3/4"- Heavy Duty can serve as a replacement net.

Made in the USA.

The hay net should be hung at a sufficient height to avoid the risk of entanglement. To withstand the pulling and chewing associated with a hay net in use, the nylon mesh is extremely durable and will not give under pressure. As a result, it’s important to ensure the hay net is safely secured and won’t become loose as the hay is consumed.
Favorite Features:
  • Easy to fill in less than 30 seconds!
  • 12" x 24" metal frame
  • Safe round edges
  • Threaded locking nut
  • Holds a 1/2 bale of hay
  • Equine quality, UV-treated DuPont fiber netting
  • 1 3/4" heavy duty - great for more aggressive eaters, horses not used to a slow feed net, or larger herds
  • 1 1/4" - great for easy keepers, horses getting minimum exercise, or metabolic conditions

Hay Chix® Free-Up Feeder is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So convenient! I’ve had various hay nets and splurged on this one, with zero regrets! I keep horses at home and will be upgrading all horses to these over time:)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Time saver! We love our Hay Chix nets and this makes haying horses so much faster! Hold hay in one hand, pull pin, drop hay in and fold up rack, put pin in, done! My gelding that tore up 4 generic nets in a month has had his up for months with no damage. Cuts down on waste, and saves from having to fill bags every day. Note: our spooky horses took a bit to get used to the shiny metal part!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unfortunately my mare figured out how to eat from the slow feeder quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed. I moved to a new boarding facility Oct. 1. They didn't want to deal with filling hay nets, but I didn't want my mare's hay on the floor. I purchased this feeder because it looked easy to fill for the barn help. I love it! Very easy to operate (once we got it installed correctly). My horse wastes a lot less hay and it lasts her all night.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Update to earlier review I have had this hay feeder for less than a month. As I noted in my earlier review, the shape of the net makes it more awkward to completely fill than a regular hay net or hay bag. My barn manager also notes that it isn't as easy to use as she expected. The netting material also isn't as thick as a couple of other styles I have and today I learned that the netting has ripped so there are now larger holes which defeats the purpose of the slow feeder. I've had a very durable slow feed hay bag and hay nets for over a year with no deterioration in the material. Time to sell the frame and go back to my old stand-bys. Very disappointed that I wasted nearly $80 on this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I would not buy this again. The barn manager where I board suggested this feeder because it appeared easy for the staff to fill, especially since I request hay be kept in front of my horse while he is stalled. The premise for the design was good but the execution falls short. The net portion is conical (narrow at the bottom) so filling it with more than a couple of flakes takes more effort than filling a regular large net that opens wide all the way down. It supposedly will hold a half bale (bale size being subjective) but once it's filled, it sticks out nearly horizontal. I think it's much easier to fill and hang multiple nets or bags. Plus, because it is so fixed, the horse can simply eat with no mental stimulation, and it's easier to scarf down hay (mine noses nets around and that tends to slow him down.) I also don't care for the hardware at the top where the frame locks in. I think there is potential for a horse to knock its face or catch an eye, and if it's hung high enough to be in a safe spot, then the net opening is at an uncomfortable height to stuff hay into the bottom for anyone under 5'7" or without exceptionally long arms. Finally, if the net were to tear, it will be a pain in the neck to disengage the frame (there is a threaded connection that requires pliers or a wrench to tighten or loosen). I wish I had returned this. The barn manager also noted today that it isn't as easy as she thought it would be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features I just bought this and put it up quickly. Appears to be very sturdy. I am actually ordering another one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great idea but it has some problems I love this concept- super easy to load, slows the hay intake. I installed 4 more of these after buying the first one but since then I am having some regrets. 1. The horses flip the nets up onto the locking mechanism at the top of the unit, where they get caught and since the edges of that are SHARP, it rips holes in the net. I have made multiple repairs but now I need 3 new nets because they are beyond repair. Thankfully my husband is a handy man and has come up with a way to anchor the bottom of the nets to the wall...so once I get new nets hopefully they will last longer. However, the nets are kind of flimsy to begin with. 2. In one of my stalls due to the stall bar location, I had to mount it a bit lower than recommended and it ended up being just the right height for my 17H gelding to rub his tail on. The locking mechanism is sharp and it ripped out huge handfuls of hair at the top of his tail, leaving several gigantic bald spots :( We all know how LONG those hairs take to grow out from the top. My husband had to remove the net from his stall. So it’s a great concept that needs some more engineering to make it worth the investment. I invested too soon and now I have to purchase new nets and anchor them down immediately or else get rid of them altogether and search for for an easy to load alternative. I also have some serious concerns about the safety issue presented by those sharp edges. Yikes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has made my life so much easier! I could not be happier. These are SO much easier than stuffing standard hay nets. The vet advised that I only feed my two geldings off of the ground, so I was hanging nets in their stalls and dragging nets out to their run-in shed. Now, I just take the hay and drop it into the Hay Chix Feeders. And these Feeders seem very well made. Worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SOOO easy to load Takes no time or effort to load. I have been using Nibble Net brand and this one feeds slower than their smallest opening net.
