Cribbing/Free to Eat Muzzle is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far, so good, my smart overweight mare still has it on after a week.
Date published: 2018-09-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job, but horse still has pretty good rub Due to my skepticism about how well a horse would be able to eat with this flat design I first tried out the very bulky and heavy metal muzzle. Compared to that, this cribbing muzzle is amazing. Compared to a cribbing collar, well, it is just another device that I find I need to weigh out my pro's and con's with it. No it doesn't have to be put on super tight like the collar, but my horse did manage to get a big rub after a few weeks under chin/lower jaw. I am given to understand that this is because she is itchy and rubs her face pretty hard and in turn this muzzle rubs her in that spot. I suppose I cannot fault the muzzle design for that - but horses do itch. I need to figure out a way to pad that particular spot. On the plus side I found after that initial "learn how to eat again" period (that I believe all muzzles require) my horse could eat much more and much easier from this muzzle than the other. If you have an incessant cribber it's worth a go. My mare is a TB with sensitive skin so I do not believe the rub issue would be applicable to everyone. I do think it's more comfortable than her dare collar that she is wearing while that rub heals up. I am hoping once flies go away the rub issue will go away and she can go back to wearing this 24/7.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Muzzel Works great for a cribbed. Holds up well good product
Date published: 2018-06-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from best option we have found we have had this for about 6 months for a very persistent cribber, and have been happy with it. We have tried some of the other styles: The muzzle with the single hole in the bottom frustrated our horse and he struggled to eat with it (he would have trouble at the round bale with that muzzle and he happily eats with this one). We have also tried the steel one (the red one with white fleece) and found that it was really heavy and eventually it rubbed a raw spot on our horse's nose :( We have found this one to be comfortable for the horse (no rubbing or sore spots and we continually watch it) and it seems really well made to put up with all of the abuse. A few things we have learned: make sure the bars are vertical, make sure to put the little plastic guides over the velcro fasteners - those really help hold those straps in place (we will use zip ties wrapped in comfort tape if one of those size ties breaks), and we use it on a break-away halter in case any mishaps occur. All in all - a good solution to a tough problem.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wasn't enough for my persistent cribber... This product fits well and is light weight. Even so, my very persisitent cribber got around the aluminum bars and just cribbed through the nylon after wearing it for 5 minutes. Shortening the fit didn't help either. If your horse is persistent like mine, try the Dare cribbing collar or the steel cage muzzle. Steel cage muzzle is heavier, but much less restrictivefor eating and breathing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best grazing muzzle The traditional muzzle is hot and the small hole in the bottom of the muzzle only frustrated my horse. This is the most humane way to manage my horses weight. I am so glad my veterinarian recommended this type of muzzle
Date published: 2017-10-30
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light weight, strong velcro, solid design, no rubs Bought this about 3wks ago for my incessant cribber (we also have a miracle collar, cribox, a Dare collar, plenty of history of workups, supplements, special diets, full turnout, all the hay she wants, and work 4 days a week--none of which have stopped her). She's like a new (happier) horse after a couple weeks w/o cribbing. She doesn't mind wearing this, it hasn't rubbed her (She is a 15'3"Oldenburg, built like a tank, with a head to match; I ordered her the XL size), and fits well to a regular halter (I have a Perri's) and so far has stayed in place. She cannot crib in it (on her water bucket, on the fence, on the waterer, on the stall wall). We did learn to put the muzzle on with the bars parallel to the length of her face, b/c if they are transverse, she can still figure out how to get to the fence boards through it to try to crib. I did note one of the bars bent slightly, but I'm hoping she won't break anything for a long time. Will update if she does. She can drink water by pushing her face against the muzzle, turning it a slight bit to an angle, and getting down into our square shaped auto waterers enough to drink (IOW's, the whole muzzle doesn't fit inside the tank opening, but she can easily drink using her technique). I do worry about cold weather (we at at 15 deg right now) and eating and drinking through cold metal, but so far she doesn't look like that's an issue. If it seems to stop her or slow her down, I'll switch back to the less effective Dare collar for cold days. But for now, we are happy with this answer!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horse figured out how to crib I am deeply disheartened and extremely disappointed that this device didn't work. Within one week my horse figured out how to press the metal grill against a fencepost and crib on the inside edge of the metal surrounding the grill. My horse is 18 years old and has been cribbing since he was 3, so I have tried every device on the market. I hate seeing him so miserable, because the neck devices have to be so tight that he gets rub sores and he has to keep his head lowered all the time just to breathe easily. I was so hoping this would be a more humane device for my horse, but it didn't work, and I wish I could get my money back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Cribbing Free muzzle works My OTTB is a cribber. With this muzzle he could not crib and, after some equine learning, became quite proficient at eating and drinking. I would not leave my horse with aggressive horses or horses who might be attempting to move up on the pecking order. The cribbing was eliminated when out to pasture and in the stall. Recommend having two halters, one for the cribbing muzzle and one for supervised grazing. That said, it is easy to attach and remove. Had it 3 issues with sturdiness.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product. I wish my mare would stop wind sucking and then I wouldn't need it. But.... Since it's a necessity now, this is a great product for the job. Nothing would stop my mare and this did the job. The velcro is easy to use and it doesn't stop her from eating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cribbing muzzle I purchased this halter a month ago because he was chewing bark on trees in his paddock. It is safe & comfortable for him & does prevent the bark chewing, while allowing him to graze & access his salt/mineral blocks. Be aware of potential rubbing spots on the face, which can be minimized by using moleskin. Also follow directions on the halter package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very light, works great! I bought this a month ago for my little rescued Morgan gelding who cribs to the point he doesn't eat, he was loosing weight and nothing was working, we tried free choice hay and cribbing collars nothing worked and he was starting to get sick. By sick I mean he was bloated, gassy and burping...his coat was dull and he was not acting like himself. I decided to try a muzzle, and purchased this one. I'm so happy I did. It's light, and durable my little guy has no problem eating or drinking, and no more cribbing!!!! He's got his bloom back and his great personality! He wears this 24/7 unless we are with him, or he is working. He has no rubs and doesn't object to wearing it. This product helps my little kill pen rescue enjoy his new life!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Muzzle for the Determined Cribber My cribber was cribbing through any collar I tried and this muzzle worked amazingly well, stopped damage to the fences. Horse was able to graze, eat treats, and drink with no difficulty, they do take a little bit of learning how to do so. Be careful to keep an eye on the metal, after heavy use, my horse wore down the metal and it snapped leaving sharp points. It will not eliminate cribbing completely (my horse learned to crib on the bars) and its great for a dominate horse who enjoys ripping others' blankets. I had problems with it rubbing around the muzzle of my horse, used fleece which helped minimize it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Still cribbing I bought this cribbing muzzle about 2-3 weeks ago. First of all, the velcro is not sturdy enough. My 3 yr old mare rubbed and rolled....getting the velcro "dirty" so that it doesn't work anymore. I used caribeaners to secure it to her leather halter. Now, she has found a way to crib with it on. I rotated it 90 degrees and she still has found a way to crib. She pushes the muzzle flush against a surface then moves her mouth until her teeth/tooth can barely reach past the metal...just enough to hook it on a post and cribs. I have recently (about the same time as this purchase) put her on U-gard and renitidine. Plus now I have to put a collar on her as well...we will see how this goes. :-/

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far, so good. Bought this just a week ago as an alternative to the Miracle Collar because my horse was getting rubs. I use this when he gets turned out, and it's worked great! My gelding is still figuring out how to eat hay with it, but he doesn't even try to crib. Overall, happy with this product! A nice alternative to a collar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks weird but does the job! I know this looks weird, but my horse had colicked for the first time in over a year and half of having him. He was cribbing at night, and hadn't been ridden in a couple of days, so he wasn't good. The cribbing collar wasn't working, so we decided to try this. He is more than willing to put it on, as he can still eat, but does fling it around a bit when it is on. He has been well ever since, knock on wood, and it stays on him well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gives my mare at break My mare is a heavy duty cribber. She wears her cribbing collar 24/7 and when she goes outside because she won't leave the fence alone, we tighten it then loosen it when she comes in. Being a TB she has worn the hair off her neck so I put fleece on the collar. That was good in the winter but with spring rain it go soaked and in the few days between visits to the barn she got rubbed raw with what can be described as hot spots. So to give her a break I decided to try this muzzle. Because there are hay feeders in the paddocks I have been afraid that she would get stuck so we use the muzzle when she is inside and the collar when she is out. It has worked out well. The hair has grown back, she is more flexible when I ride her. It did not take her long to figure out how to eat hay and drink with it but grain has been more difficult so we just remove it long enough for her to eat. It was easy to attach to her halter which is a break away crown for more safety. I would recommend this muzzle to anyone with a cribber, you just may have to adjust times when they wear it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't last I bought the muzzle because my horse decided his winter blues was too boring and his brother's blankets needed adjustments (aka tears.) The muzzle worked great but was abused quickly and 2 of the 4 straps fell off or were removed by him in about 14 days. I wish it was structurally more sturdy because otherwise it would be prefect!
Date published: 2015-02-04
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wish it was more durable My horse has unfortunately gone through 2 of these in 2 weeks. The stitching on the first muzzle fell apart within 2 days of my horse wearing it. The bar on the second muzzle broke winthin 5 days of the muzzle arriving. This product would work extremely well if it wasn't so poorly built. Thank goodness for Smartpak's great customer service!
Date published: 2014-11-13
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great muzzle just needs stronger Velcro I have a mild cribber who can't wear a miracle collar or a nutcracker, and ate right through the Dare collar. This allows her to eat and drink freely but stops the cribbing. My biggest criticism is that the velcro is very weak. They need to either use stronger velcro or switch to a different design where the 2 sides and bottom attachment are clips of some sort to halter and the top nose attachment be similar to what it is now, just with a stronger attachment (with comfort in mind). I find I need to buy 1 per year as the single loop that attaches to the halter just becomes weak and wears away.
Date published: 2014-10-14
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horse figured it out within 36 hours of wearing it My horse is a ridiculous cribber and always tries, even when he has a tight collar on. My trainer suggested a muzzle, so I ordered this one and received it in the mail a couple days later. I love the shipping, and love SmartPak, but my horse managed to pull down three boards within the 36 hours he had it on. Granted, he is a very smart horse, but this product shouldn't be that easy to crib with.
Date published: 2014-10-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely can't Crib! I purchased this product wanting my horse to have a bigger eating area yet stop him from cribbing. This does the trick. It's a little heavy but not too bad. I recommend you buying fleece for the halter and such... It will rub. A little hanibal lecter like, but hey, it works!
Date published: 2014-08-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what we needed! I bought this because my horse is boarded in a group turnout situation. When it was him and the 2-year-old, things were fine. Upon adding a new pony to the mix, my very large gelding began charging at the other two and biting them severely. He caused some pretty ugly skin wounds and destroyed a blanket. We tried another muzzle, which did not fit well and seemed to bother my horse. This new muzzle came in a large enough size to fit well, allows my horse to eat his normal hay ration, and completely prevents his aggression toward the other horses. Peace reigns once again in his paddock, and I have not had to replace any more blankets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Muzzle that stays on My chunky gelding doesn't like being separated from his chums, so we pop this over his head and off he goes. Though he plays, it stays. No worries.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fell apart within a couple of weeks Bought this for my horse to wear when he is turned out in a small paddock during inclement weather. Even with hay, he gets bored and will start to chew. Since he only wears it for short periods of time, I thought it would hold up okay. Needless to say, it was not at all durable. The velcro straps broke and even baling twine could not hold it together. I would not recommend this product.
Date published: 2013-01-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Couldn't ask for a better product! LOVE the break away and the removable anti-grazing feature. We have only been using it for about 2 wks. now so durability is unknown at this point.
Date published: 2012-05-11
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wouldn't Recommend It My horse can still crib through the muzzle. I have gone through 2 of them in the last 2 months, they only last about a week before my horse finds some way to destruct it. The first one he busted the metal bars out of it. The 2nd one he ripped the velco straps off. I wouldn't recommend this product because it is expensive, does not last, and the horse can still crib through it. I've tried everything with my cribber, but this is definitely not the answer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it My mare is allergic to oak and acorns (along with nearly everything else). My pasture has gorgeous oak trees and I was unable to turn her out with the other horses because she would eat the acorns, leaves, and play with the bark. Now she grazes happily alongside her barn mates. Fit well too. She is part draft so I bought the largest size. She can't get her lips around the bad stuff, but the grass is easily grazed through the slats. Thank you Smart Pak!
