Beautiful look, terrible quality
I have worn these for <6 months, and they are literally falling apart at the seams. I am not a pro, I ride one horse ~5x/week. The stretch panel has multiple holes, and the seams have detached. I’ve tried to repair them, but that resulted in lumpy seams that are wearing on my saddle flaps. Sadly, these are expensive garbage. This is my third pair of the close contact chap, and the only ones I’ve found to fit my bird legs. My first pair was great - the last two have been junk. Ariat quality just isn’t what it used to be.

These are so comfortable!! Follow the reviews and go for a tight fit, they will stretch some and mold to your leg. I was skeptical at first as they were SO snug, but after a few wearings around the house they fit great! I don't usually write reviews but the advice given by others really helped me

Favorite half chaps
Bought a pair almost a year ago and still holding up great with daily use! Bought another pair to have as a back up.
Does stretch out a bit so make sure they are really snug when purchasing.

Look like tall boots
These chaps are beautiful. Very nice leather and provide a clean look with the zipper up the back rather than on the side. The measurements are true to size. The S measures 14.5" and the M measures 15.5" at the widest part of the calf. I struggled to get the zipper engaged at the bottom but once it is seated correctly it zips up smoothly. Zipper is very sturdy. I zipped them on every day for a week in my house before deciding to keep them. Happily, they went on much easier when I took them to the barn for my first ride. Very comfortable to ride in and provided good grip. I am glad that I worked my way through the initial struggle to start the zipper.

Great Half Chaps
I bought these half chaps to replace my Tredstep half chaps. I love Ariat paddock boots and have been wearing them forever, but I found Tredstep sizing with half chaps works best for my fit (I wear a 16/16 in Tredstep half chaps). However, I have recently gone through two pairs of Tredsteps within a year because I had issues with their button snaps pulling through and breaking. I finally decided to switch to Ariat, but I was nervous with the half chaps being 17.5 height. I first bought the MS in these (I could not get the zippers to touch) so I then bought the LS and they fit perfectly, hitting the back of my knee a bit before breaking them in. They look GREAT. They definitely took a week or two to drop and stop poking me behind the knee, but for the durability and look of these it is worth it. Easy to clean and I love the fitted support. I have small ankles and big calves and I find they aren't too big in the ankle either.

Worst half chaps I've ever bought
These are great chaps... until they stretch, twist and scratch the heck out of your saddle flaps. DO NOT recommend. I wish they weren't so used so I could return. A complete waste of money.

My daughter loves these chaps!
My eleven year-old daughter was very particular about the chaps she wanted after getting the Ariat boots she had been asking for. She only wanted chaps with a back zipper, and we had to order a few different pairs until she found exactly what she was looking for. She really loves these, and has much less of a problem zipping them up herself as I expected she would. On another note, I found Smartpak after six years of buying equestrian apparel (and occasional treats) through another company, that I was not very happy with. I love the excellent service I receive from Smartpak, and we will be loyal customers from now on!

Great half-chaps!
My previous half-chaps were Ariat Breeze's, which I loved except that they had a velcro tab at the bottom instead of a snap, and that they didn't work well with spurs. After trying multiple different brands and other Ariat styles, I settled on these for replacements, and boy am I glad that I did. They have more of a boot look to them, which I love. And once broken in they are every bit as comfortable as the Breeze's. They are made of a thicker leather, so look classier in my opinion, and I think they will be more durable. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is that even the shortest version is a bit too long for me and my very short calves. I do like that the zipper zips from the bottom up, that way if I need to do a deep squat for some reason, I can unzip the top a little to keep it from digging into the back of my knee. Like all Ariat products that I have tried, both the quality and style are top notch!

Everything I Wanted!!
I bought these about a month ago after agonizing over many other options. Even though I’m only schooling I wanted to up my appearance and have the tall boot look. My leg measurements were on the line between two sizes - and I discussed multiple options with customer service - they were GREAT! ( I called them a lot !)
My takeaway- yes, these fit really tight, like almost cutting off circulation tight- but if you can zip them all but the last 1/2 inch you’ll be happy with the fit when then stretch. I wore them around the house for a least a week before riding in them!
I can’t speak about durability but I do know the support has helped my lower leg and I just feel better.
Like my other ariat products these seem well made and fit well over my Heritage lace paddock boots.

Quality Chaps
I have not used them yet, but by just trying them on, I think I'll like them. Out of the package, they seem super nice! I was between a medium-short and a large-short, and ended up sizing up... glad I did! They zipped up snugly but not too tight! No complaints here! Can't wait to try them out!

Great chaps
After waiting longer than the normal time for shipping I received the half chaps and they were worth the wait. Like other reviewers said, they are true to size and at first seem too tight but after a couple of rides they break in and fit just right and offer great support.

Absolutely Beautiful and Fit Great!
I finally found the perfect pair! I measured between Med and Large, and Large Short fit me perfectly. I measure shorter than a short by 2-3 inches, but they will work ok in height / no worse than my previous chaps. Leather is soft and they look like nice tall boots!

Great look
I bought these 3 weeks ago when the other Ariats I ordered that were on sale were cancelled due to being oversold. I ordered the XXS and was very worried they would be too small. I am 5’1” and my calf is about a 12.5. They were at first very tight and hard to zip all the way up but after about 4-5 rides they stretched out nicely and fit wonderfully now. They are elegant and look like a very nice boot. I am happy I bought them. Only time will tell on how well they hold up as I haven’t had them long. Just remember they will stretch so go with the smaller side.

Great quality half-chap
I have never purchased a zip half-chap -- always Velcro tab closures, so this was new to me -- especially the back zip which was definitely a time consuming hassle
to zip during the first few times I wore them. However, I have figured that (for me) the best way to zip them is to THRUST the zipper into the receptacle -- working from the inside of my leg (instead of approaching it from the outside or back of the leg). It still takes a little bit of being a contortionist, but it will get easier with time. I like the way they feel when I ride -- very soft and flexible. The sizing of SS (according to my measurements) was perfect. I bought these along with the Ariat Devon pro XV paddock boot. They work/look great together.

I LOVE my old Ariat half chaps. Trying to purchase new ones has been frustrating as the sizing has changed dramatically. I have had to return 2 pairs now trying to get the right size with lots of time inbetween waiting for them to arrive as they are always on back order. Would love for Ariat to be consistent with their sizes.

These are the best
Have had these for two weeks, and they are the best half chaps I have had, and that includes other Ariat (Breeze), TredSteps, and Grand Prix. I bought the size I measured, and they are fine. They were initially stiff to start the zipper, but I sat down and put my foot over my opposite knee and was able to pull the two sides of the chap together and then insert the zipper and get it started. Mine are a bit high at my knee, but I just unzip them an inch or two. They are tight and supportive, like a great pair of boots (probably better). I give them a quick saddle soap after each ride, and they clean up quickly and easily. What else can I say about them? My TredSteps literally gave me tendonitis doing a pretzel twist to zip them up, and will never buy them again. The Breeze have that slippery lining . . . Buy these.

90 mins and 2 pr of pliers
Should have listened to most of the other reviewers and ignored the pretty straightforward size chart included for these chaps. Size chart says 14.5 inches is a size small. With breeches and socks, at the widest part, my calves were just over 14.25. I got these in small per the chart, and, as many others have noted, I couldn't even zip them when I first took them out of the box. Thanks to the reviewers who said they just needed to break these in like tall boots, I decided to make it work. (They are truly beautiful.) 90 minutes, two pairs of pliers (one to grab the zipper and one to pull the elastic closer), and much unwholesome language later, I finally had them on -- and what's weird was they actually felt fine once they were zipped. They look gorgeous and give great leg support.

Good Quality
My beloved Ariat chaps have been around for 8+ years. I decided to buy new ones for my birthday. I am always a ST, but took the advice of others and ordered MT. Glad I did. Very tight over ankle, but after three rides they are easier. Love how close the contact is. Great leather. Hopefully they last another 8 years!!

Great chaps!
These chaps are very soft and comfortable. Upon suggestion of the other reviewers, I bought a size up and they fit just fine and for me these have the perfect length. I bought these because I love the rugged zippers on Ariats, and i am hoping to get a lot of use and years out of these.

Great chap, a few comments
Very happy i bought this product. It is super grippy and feels of good quality. They are a little tall, im 5'10 and bought regular length which should be short if anything so beware of that. I do expect them to drop some. Over all super happy. I really did not like the feel of the breeze or tredstep medici. These feel mich more sturdy and grippy. I wear a medium in the super stretchy chaps, but ordered a large since these are less stretchy. They fit well for schooling.

Get them!
I bought these chaps to replace an my old Tredstep ones that were falling apart. There is definitely a break in period, and during that time I had some cutting happening in the back of my knee area (was solved with bandaids)... for me it was about 6 solid rides. Once they drop and mold to your leg they are fabulous and look amazing! Love them.

Good for small calves
I have owned a pair of Ariat old style (not close contact) half chaps for years and they fit perfectly and were easy to put on. Even though I measured my calf and ordered the appropriate size I could not zip them up much past my ankle. Also the rear zip versus the side zip of my old pair is much more difficult to manage. I had to return and exchange them for a different brand. On the positive, the leather was nice and soft so if you have small calves they might work for you.

Run Small!
I've always been a MT and in using the measurements provided by SmartPak for the Ariat half chaps, I measured as a MT (as always.) I received them today and I can't even get them up over my ankle! Beautiful quality, yes! But sizing measurements as suggested by the chart given, wrong!!! Run very, very small!

Perfect Fit!
These half chaps fit me perfectly! I have an extremely long and skinny leg, and I found a pair they fit like they are custom to me! Only ridden in them a few times and they are so comfortable, I haven't had any problems with them! I would recommend them to anybody!
