Cold Therapy Application Procedure
1. For optimal cold treatment, remove GelPaks from boots and place in freezer for six hours before initial use.
2. As the GelPaks will never freeze solid, lay them flat and evenly disperse gel before placing in corresponding (right or left) boot.
3. Place uncompressed boot against the leg. Secure with Velcro® attachments.
4. Attach pump, turn valve to "On" position and pump to desired level of compression (8-12 pumps).
5. Once desired compression is reached, turn valve to "Off' position and detach tube.
6. To end therapy, turn valve to "On" position to deflate boot before removing from leg.
7. After use, the GelPaks should be returned to the freezer immediately, but only require 20 minutes in the freezer to regain a freezing temperature after initial use. If a freezer is not available, the GelPaks can be placed in a large, sealed bag and buried in an ice chest to regain freezing temperature.

2. Increase water temperature to 71ºC/160ºF and maintain at temperature for 20- minutes.
3. Repeat Steps 2 - 6 from Cold Therapy Instructions.

Pricey but well worth it
I purchased these for my gelding who was diagnosed with a superficial flexor tendon injury and was instructed to ice as much as possible. These boots are very easy to use, and I love the fact that they offer compression as well as cold therapy. The gel packs don't stay ice cold, but for how convenient they are to use, I really can't complain. They are fairly durable - I have used them 2-3 times a day for the past two months and they're not showing much wear and tear, besides little pieces of bedding that stick to them. Overall I highly recommend these boots to anyone looking for convenient cols therapy.

The verdict is still out...
My mare is off due to an inflamed splint bone and I wanted to find an easy way to cool her legs down after we get back into work. To preface, I am a physical therapist and therefore have a little bit of a different way of looking at certain things. I think the misconception about these boots is that they are going to make your horses legs as cold as icing them. Guess what? Nothing will make the legs as cold as water and ice. I absolutely love the concept of these boots, cold AND compression is hard to come by. The first time I tried them I took the boots off after twenty minutes and I wasn't that impressed with how cold her legs felt...HOWEVER, I attempted a second time the following evening and after they were on her for twenty minutes I put them on my arm and pumped them up. They still had a lot of cold left to them and while the boot was on my arm it was quite chilly. I am keeping the boots because they will be super simple and not messy at all when I'm just looking for a quick cool down after a ride. I wish they got a little colder but I think I just wanted her legs to be as cold as they get when she gets iced which is too high a standard for anything other than regular old ice and water. Great quality and construction though, I can tell they will last a long time.

Am I the only one?
I felt these boots did not stay cold long enough. I have to travel with them in an ice-filled cooler for several hours to events, and after 20 minutes on my mare's front legs, I removed them and they were barely cool. No cold left for the hind legs! I tried on 2 separate occasions with the same result. Perhaps if you could take them right out of the freezer it would be a different story. They are much easier to use than boots with multiple ice/gel pack inserts or just plain ice. The compression is a great idea, but the longevity of the "cooling" effect left a lot to be desired.

Excellent Cold Therapy Product
I bought this product for my mare when she developed a leg ligament injury. I love the fact it provides both cold therapy and compression, two of the components for treatment of inflammation. With the many closures, it stays in place extremely well and covers the full lower leg. 2 pumps are provided though they could have only provided one, and there is a slight twisting lock when you connect to ensure you get the pressure in the boot. There is clearly a left and a right leg, and the ice pack maintains flexibility even when frozen. I use one every day for over a month now and it still looks like new except for the small hay flecks that adhere to the exterior fabric. Once my mare is back in full work, I will be using both on her front legs every time we work they are so easy to use and durable. My mare is used to having her legs wrapped and she is totally unconcerned with these on her leg.

Excellent Product for Cold Therapy
My horse recently had a leg injury and I was using another product that was good, but I was intrigued by the ability to add compression to the cold therapy and the fact the gel product would be less stiff when frozen. While these boots are significantly more expensive that what I had been using, I think they are a good investment. The materials seem sturdy and the boot fits the horse's leg very well. They even give some spares of the connector and two complete bulbs with hosing when one could have been enough. Each boot is designed to fit a right or left front leg. And the ability to add compression to the cold really does seem to make a difference in overall effect, appearing to speed the healing. I am using the one boot for an injury now, but I will use both after work on the front legs once the horse is back in work. Seems ideal for maintenance of an older horse who is still jumping.

great investment
I was going to get a pair of whirlpool boots, but decided to give these a try. I like them because they compress everything together, my gelding bowed his tendon and after one week using these everyday you can’t really even see the bow anymore. Makes a great addition to the standard bow treatment and we are using them on the other horses in training as well as a preventive measure.

SAVED MY HORSE'S LEGS!!
I bought two pairs of these ice boots last year for my 17h 17yr/o Hanoverian Hunter. He's been in the show ring all his life but had suffered a suspensory in his legs but over came it with surgery. I was starting to worry about this year being the last year competing over 3' fences which would mean that it would be time to sell him at the end of the year. But with this product my horse's legs are doing so well that I may get to keep my pony and show him in the 3' again next year!! I absolutely love this product!

Love these!
I purchased this product at a horse show before SmartPak started carrying them. I'm glad everyone else can benefit from SmartPak prices instead of show vendor prices, but this was worth the extra money at the time!
The compression really does add to the cooling factor and it is very easy to use. The pump's air line detaches easily, so you can leave your horse in his stall loose while getting excellent therapy. I haven't used other cold or compression therapies, they were all either messy and wet or very expensive, this is the answer!
