Decent for the price
The halter feels quality, but the hardware is a fake-gold color. It will work just great for what I ordered it for (only halter for a sale horse), but if I had it to do again, I would probably pay just a bit more and get more quality hardware.

The Ideal Halter
I bought my halter in October 2017, black horse size with brass fittings. Today, August 2019, I gave it a good cleaning for the first time in ages and realized how badly I needed to review this thing!
Initially: It came to me with the brass plate I ordered already affixed, done straight and sturdily attached. The leather was pleasantly stiff, the kind that I know to break-in to butter soft with time and care, without stretching too much or lacking sturdiness. The straps were all of the same type/quality of leather to my understanding, and there were no rough edges or uneven stitching that I could see. The spring-loaded throat snap was smooth to operate and not painfully tight to clip, and I liked the fit and adjustability for my long-faced TB cross.
In two years, my feelings haven’t changed and this halter has aged beautifully. The leather has broken in to mold perfectly to Mozart’s face, and is soft and pleasant to hold, though still so sturdy. The throat clip feels the same as it did the day I pulled it out of the box. The brass fixtures show no Signs of stress which I especially appreciate after my boy snapped the metal throatlatch ring of his first halter, and the (not breakaway) leather of his second. This halter is kept in a dry area where it is out of the rain, but at one time was dropped in the snow when the entire halter box broke and left for about 12 hours before it was found, wiped down, and showed no sign of it’s adventures, while all of the nylon halters with it had to be tossed after they dried and shrank up. Another plus of leather! Over the two years I’ve had this halter, my only qualm is that the name-plate has oxidized, but this is a minor detail to me and I did zero brass maintenance for the first year and a half of owning it. I would call this a show halter, but it is so useable and handy that I think they’re best used every day! Unfortunately the website currently isn’t allowing me to upload photos, or I would share them!

Great value
Excellent quality for the price! Sturdy and good looking. I bought the chestnut because of the reviews saying Havana was oily. I gave it a good conditioning with lederbalsam and am very pleased. Would definitely buy again.

Poor quality of craftmanship
This halter broke the very first time I used it on my Tennessee Walker. The stitches came right out and glue didnt hold the leather together.

Great Halter - Great Price
I prefer to use leather halters. Nylon can rub and cause brush burns more easily on sensitive equine skin. This is a great halter at an affordable price. It is easy to clean and can be used for every day or for show.

Beware the Havanna!
I have the lighter chestnut color in this halter and love it! I bought the darker havanna color for shows and I am not happy. Took it out of the box and it was very oily. Went to a show this weekend and had it on my grey horse, it turned his face pink! He was discolored for the leather. Luckily, I had some green spot remover that worked. What the heck?!?! Otherwise, attractive and well made... but I can't use it.

I received this halter as a Christmas present and absolutely love it. The leather is so soft and very flexible right out of the box. I received the horse size and was a bit worried it would be too large for my tiny headed quarter horse, but the halter is so adjustable it fits perfectly without looking like I had to tighten everything. Yes, it comes oily out of the box, but clean it twice with some leather soap and water without a white shirt on and you’ll have no problems at all!! The oil kept it so nice when shipping and gives it a nice color. Amazing halter for the price, you won’t be dissapointed!

Oily and stains everything!
The halter arrived and was extremely oily and stains everything it touches with a pink/red color. Washed the halter with water and is slowly getting less oily. Spend more money on a better product.

Gorgeous halter— but beware
I love this halter and have bought several of them. However, buyer beware on two fronts:
1. When my horse broke the crownpiece, I contacted Smartpak about purchasing a replacement. The rep said that they weren’t for sale and i’d have to buy a brand new halter. What? Isn’t that the whole point of the breakaway— so it can break if a horse freaks out and subsequently be replaced? Why would I spend $70 on a halter then?
2. DO NOT ENGRAVE THROUGH SMARTPAK. The engraving looks nice for awhile, but because it’s just a cheap laser onto the halter, and not actually engraved/etched into it, a few drops of water will smudge the writing and make it look terrible. This happened to my halter only weeks after I had it, and I never turn my horses out in their halters.

Great value
Excellent value. Beautiful craftsmanship. Nice brass hardware. I like it very much. My only dilemma is that I purchased the Havana color. And my horse is white. If your horse is Bay, Chestnut, black won't be a problem. I noticed the color bleeding so I cleaned it twice and conditioned it twice and it continued to happen. After about four to five weeks it stopped. Now its perfect, beautiful. Regardless use with caution on white especially during show season

Just what I wanted
Very nice leather and appears to be good quality stitching and hardware. Time will tell how durable it is. It did come "well oiled" so I've done a considerable amount of wiping to remove the excess oil. I can only rank it "good" quality since I have barely used it and can't speak to it's durability.

Nice thick leather!
I bought this halter with an engraved nameplate to show my yearling in, it looks nice and is very adjustable to fit his head just right. The havana dye comes off on everything: my hands, clothing, etc. Luckily he is black. I'm not sure why I bought the same halter for my perlino gelding, it will certainly stain his light fur.

Will Never Buy A Different Halter-- EVER!
I bought one of these halters over a year ago and just recently purchased a second one because they were on sale. I cannot believe this quality of halter is available at this price point. It is every bit as nice as the Weaver leather ones-- if not nicer-- and less expensive. The halter I purchased over a year ago (probably a year and a half ago) has been used daily and held up perfectly. It is soft, supple, cleans up well, stitching is in tact--no complaints whatsoever. The one I just purchased arrived in simply beautiful condition. The leather is soft and supple and came out of the box as though it has just been conditioned before being shipped out. I'm very, very pleased with the quality, durability and price point on these halters that I can't imagine finding something I like better!

I bought this halter for my mare. got it and it looks awesome! it's a very pretty halter but j wont not recommend this item....when I received it the leather dye was bleeding and dyed everything it touched now I can't get it to stop bleeding!

Beautifully made
I wanted to buy a nice, everyday leather halter for my new horse, but didn't want to spend a ton of money on something that might get trashed right away. I opted for the Smartpak halter because the price is pretty reasonable when compared to other leather-halter brands, and I was not disappointed at all. The halter is very good-looking, and looks to be well-crafted. I expect that it will hold up for many years!

Great quality leather, like other reviews said it does have a red tint to it I the beginning from the oils coming off the leather but after some use and cleaning did not notice the color any more. Would be comparable to Walsh leather halter for fraction of the price!

Dye Bleeds
I was so impressed that this customized halter arrived so quickly. It looked great on my horse and came at a very reasonable price. What I could not understand was why the cuffs of my new riding shirt were pink, why my horse's white booties were blotchy pink and red, and then why my horse's blaze was red. Then, I understood. The halter, which came with an oily film on it, was bleeding dye on everything it touched. I rubbed and rubbed it, trying to get the extra dye off, wrecking a towel in the process. I suppose it will stop bleeding at some point. Until then, I am being careful when I handle it, and what I leave it on top of.

Red Dye Everywhere
This is actually the second time I've purchased this halter in the span of a year. The first time, it came dripping in red dye which I figured was defective and returned. I thought I'd give it another shot and yet again, there is red everywhere!! My friend also had the same issue, with it even leaving red on her horse's blaze. For the money, I expect better leather quality.

perfect fit! great quality!
I just ordered this for my new mare, and both she and I adore this product! My mare is 17 hands, but she is a petite thoroughbred, and I ordered the horse size; it was the perfect fit! The leather is great quality and it has a nice shine to it. Overall this product is a solid 10/10!
