This saddle incorporates quality leather on seat, knee pads, and trim to give the feel of riding on an all leather saddle. The moveable under-flap thigh blocks allow for a custom fit and help the rider maintain a balanced dressage position. Great option for a high withered horse
I have a custom made saddle for my mare, but was looking to find a less expensive option for my new gelding as I knew his shape would change with his training. My very experienced and talented fitter has long recommended these as a good option so I ordered one to have here when she came to do a fitting. After trying several other saddles, we kept coming back to the Thorowgood due to how well it fit him and how he moved in it. It put me in a good position as well. As the test saddle looked to be new or nearly new, I had her flock it to fit us and we have been riding in it 2-4 days a week for over a year now. My coach has also commented on how well it fits us both. The only downside for me is that on a long trail ride (3+ hours), it is not as comfortable as my custom made saddle but certainly not unbearable by any means. This particular saddle has leather panels which I think are a nice upgrade. I had previously owned a Wintec for another horse and the quality of this saddle is much better. Having the Smart Pak trial program available meant it only made good sense to give this one a try.

SUPER narrow channel
Overall, the quality of the saddle was nice and did fit the profile of my high withered horse. The synthetic leather was grippy and I don't imagine slipping around while riding would be an issue with this saddle. The flocked panels are solid but still have a good squish to them. However, there was one MAJOR issue: the channel of the saddle narrowed to just 1 1/2 finger width! Ouch! this would have caused my horse a lot of pain as it would pinch his spine and not give him the room he needs to bend and turn. I am surprised that newer saddles are still being manufactured this way. I would have kept the saddle if it weren't for this major issue.
Aside from the saddle, Smartpack's team was very helpful and I am fully satisfied with their performance. They are very helpful and respond quickly to inquiries. Unfortunately, it just wasn't the right saddle for me. I definitely recommend trialing the saddle if you are still interested in purchasing it.

My older OTTB mare and I have recently taken up Dressage and have been searching for a saddle. We tried several, until our trainer suggested we try the Thorowgood. I purchased the test ride saddle in a 17.5, as well as a MW gullet. The gullet system is easy to use, it didn't take me too long to figure it out (being my first gullet change). We have ridden in it 3 times, once being a lesson, and I have never felt more connected to my horse. She goes much more smoothly in it, and my instructor even pointed out that she becomes much rounder and overall looks very comfortable. A saddle fitter came after our lesson to see this saddle on her, and stated that it did not pinch her anywhere, and that this saddle is a perfect match for my girl. The seat is comfortable, and I can feel every step my mare takes- unlike when we were using other saddles. It is still early on, but I'm extremely happy to have this saddle!

Great Fit
I have a young, high withered horse: He has already grown out of two saddles as his muscling changes. This saddle fits him perfectly and is super comfy to ride in. Puts my leg in the right place and the deep seat is surprisingly not constricting. I had another Thorowgood which I sold after 8 years, and the new person is riding and showing in it. These saddles hold up.

It was delivered to me all busted up and cracked
I ordered this saddle online. And when I finally did receive it the saddle had white paint and was all cracked . I had to send it back the next day. They didn’t give me reasons why it was that way and the box it came in was fine. It took weeks for them to send me another by air mail because I started to Complain . No sorry or anything. First real problem I have had with Smartpak. The new saddle I finally got is NICE .

Great value
Bought this saddle for a very hard to fit refined TB after trying several others including “the adjustable tree type.” Outr horse was very quick to let us know if the saddles were not a good fit for him and much preferred the stubben and Antares that were over budget. Our trainer rode him in it as our final decision and found it to be comfortable for the price range. The outer leather is soft and supple. A good buy for the high withered tb type.

Good for a growing horse
I've had this saddle for about six months. I find that it's comfortable and doesn't force you into a certain position (which sometimes is good, sometimes is bad!). I purchased this saddle specifically because I had gotten a young, underweight thoroughbred and knew that she would be putting on weight and changing her shape often over the next few years. I love how adjustable this saddle is. Unlike other synthetic saddles that I researched, this one has wool flocked panels still, so my saddle fitter was able to shape it to my mare. He actually seemed quite happy to work on a Thorowgood. While I do like the saddle, the underside of the panels is a very porous, cloth-like material that I fear is really absorbing sweat. This is also the most difficult part of the saddle to clean. In the warmer months you could really see the sweat outlines on the panels, and can't just wipe them down like the other portions of the saddle.

Didn't fit like the trial saddle
I purchased the trial saddle, like it and re-ordered a non-trial saddle. The fit on the second saddle was not the same and my horse hated it. I contacted smartpak to return it and said I could return it no-problem. I was then charged a 10% re-stocking fee, which wasn't explained until after they had received the second saddle. Please be aware of the fees and the possible fit issues between saddles.
The saddles' seat is a comfy leather, but the underside and panels are stiff due to it being synthetic.
