Rockville, MD (April 11, 2011) – CANTER will present the SmartPak™-sponsored award to the highest placing thoroughbred ex-race horse competing in the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event on April 28 – May 1, 2011 in Lexington, KY. This is the 31st Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event and it is the first time the ex-race horse has been recognized as a valiant competitor.

“This is an amazing event and we are very excited to have the opportunity to recognize an ex-race horse and the effort its owner has made to retrain it and give it the opportunity to excel in a new sport,” said Allie Conrad, executive director CANTER Mid-Atlantic and CANTER National board member. “By their nature, thoroughbreds are very athletic and competitive and we hope this small recognition will encourage other riders and trainers to buy an ex-race horse for their next event horse."

The award, an embroidered wool dress sheet sponsored by SmartPak, will be presented to the highest placing ex-race horse. “We are proud to provide this award to CANTER,” said Colby Balazs, Vice President of Marketing at SmartPak. “Many of our customers, and several employees, own and compete on ex-race horses. We’re happy to be a part of recognizing these tremendous athletes as they perform on US Eventing’s biggest stage.”

CANTER-Mid Atlantic volunteers regularly visit Charles Town Races & Slots in West Virginia, Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, MD, Bowie Training Center in Bowie, MD, Laurel Race Course in Laurel, MD and Delaware Park, Wilmington, DE, to meet with trainers and owners of horses that are ready to retire from racing but are capable of beginning a second career.
