POPULAR EQUINE COMPANY RECOGNIZED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT

SmartPak is Featured in New Eco-Horsekeeping Book

Plymouth, MA – April 16, 2009 - Committed to minimizing their environmental footprint since the launch of their pioneering supplement service in 2000, this Earth Day is particularly meaningful for SmartPak™ with their recent feature in the newly published book Eco-Horsekeeping; Over 100 Budget-Friendly Ways You and Your Horse Can Save the Planet. Written by Lucinda Dyer, the book includes a foreword from SmartPak founder, Rebecca Minard. Eco-Horsekeeping, published by Trafalgar Square Books, is the first ever guide to eco-friendly horse care.

"We were so excited to hear that someone was finally writing a book on eco-friendly horse care and even more honored when Lucinda chose to feature us in it," said Minard. "For many years, we've been committed to operating in an environmentally conscious way, and we're so happy to share our story in the context of this book." Eco-Horsekeeping illustrates practical ways that you can make an impact on the health of the environment from a horse owner's point of view. It includes sections for the horse, the rider, the barn, as well as trailering and showing "on the road," and it also relates how other businesses, riders, and barn owners are already successfully pursuing their own green initiatives.

"One of the reasons why I contacted SmartPak when I started writing this book, is because I was so impressed with their commitment to the environment and willingness to consider the environment in all that they do," said Dyer, author of the book. "SmartPak faithfully subscribes to the 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' philosophy of conservation, and incorporates a number of green initiatives in their offices and store, as well as their very own homes and barns."

Since they were introduced in 1999, the patented daily dose SmartPak packaging has been made from recycled and recyclable materials. Today SmartPaks are made from 100% recycled plastic with over 35% post-consumer content and they’re already on their second life. SmartPak customers can recycle their SmartPaks again and they'll see yet another (third) life. In contrast, conventional supplement buckets are made from virgin plastic and while some get reused, most wind up taking space in landfills. SmartPak estimates that they've kept over 1.5 million supplement buckets out of landfills by dispensing supplements in the daily dose packaging. SmartPak's other environmental efforts include using custom fitting cardboard boxes which allow them to ship SmartPaks without the use of peanuts or other void fill and using recycled cardboard to pack all orders. Another unique feature of the SmartPak system is that it can save gas. "When a horse is on the SmartPak system, the number of emergency trips to the tack or feed store will plummet – saving gas," commented Paal Gisholt, president and CEO of SmartPak. And SmartPak's Barn Buddy program allows them to combine many packages into a single, efficient UPS delivery, right to the barn.

To keep the pressure on themselves to continue making improvements, SmartPak solicits ideas from staff and from their customers to help them identify ways to continue to reduce their environmental impact. "Earth Day is a great time to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished, but it’s also a time for us to take stock of new initiatives to pursue over the next year," said Gisholt. "We encourage our colleagues in the equine industry to join us; together we can accomplish a lot."

With over 300 supplements to choose from and a complete line of horse care supplies, SmartPak has become the company that horse owners turn to when they want a wide selection of products with unparalleled service. In addition to the SmartPak supplement system, the company offers a broad line of horse health and rider items, dog supplies, and equine and canine pharmacy items sold through the company’s catalog, Web site and retail store.
